Another thing about Luke vs Vader is that Vader wasn't trying to kill him in both fights, and he was conflicted in the second. As soon as it was clear in ESB that Luke COULD put up a fight Vader took his hand. In RotJ Luke needed to go apeshyt to defeat Vader who just found out he had a daughter as well.

I gave y'all TFA because Kylo got shot, just killed his pops and wasn't trying to kill her - but TLJ

A Kylo who just fully embraced the darkside, allowing him to trick Snoke, has to be saved from the guard by Rey who went harder than Kylo and then manages to go toe to toe in their saberstruggle. She also wakes up before he does.

I'm not sure it matters if Rey is a Mary Sue cause the antagonist isn't worthy of a Mary Sue.

The reason Mary Sues exist is cause the character overcomes all odd when they shouldn't. The First Order and Kylo haven't really proven themselves worthy of being too difficult to overcome.

Vader and the Empire were understood and easy to understand why and how they came to power and maintain it. The First Order and Snoke....eh.

Yeah the whole story is a poorly done rehash.

Luke knew old Ben Kenobi his entire life. You really need to go back and watch new hope it is abundantly clear that luke knew ben before the start of the movie.

All stories in film have artistic tropes. It no more matters that Rey is a "Mary Sue" than we all know she's a main character and thus will never be killed off. All adventure film includes aspects of disbelief.

However, I think it's really strange that people have no problem pointing out trash female characters when movies have been making Gary Stu male characters for decades. There are a lot of trash too perfect male protagonists as well.

This is essentially my point too. Male protagonists are made all-powerful in plot lines all the time.
