Do you live in nyc? I’m in East NY as we speak and I have never heard anyone say that after being here 20+ years....usually Philly is considered and compared to the cities in its tri-state area in south jersey or in Delaware.

I was born and raised in Philly myself (I’ll be there tomorrow for a wedding this weekend)..most people there seem to talk about nyc like it’s another country.

IMO, it’s not a perfect comparison, but I think Baltimore has more in common with Philly than it does NYC the landscape is pretty much the same but Philly has like 3x the people

I'm from Baltimore, born and raised.

They both have large buildings and people who talk fast and wear similar clothes

But Describing a city as Mini New York is ridiculous

It's like saying it's a baby elephant

There's like what.. 8+ Million people in New York ?!

:mjtf:

The population of the cities isn't what makes the similar or different. People day that Boston and Philly are similar, yet Philly has a million+ people more than Boston

Philly (BYRD GANG)
philly is not a mini NYC but Philly is def overshadowed by NYC like OP is claiming.

Just like Baltimore is overshadowed by DC but at the same time Baltimore is NOT a mini DC.

You not understanding what people are saying. NYC doesn't overshadow Philly because they are two different cities breh. They can never be comparable. I think the reason NYC and Philly always gotten along was due to being different from each other but close. The culture always been different. NYC even has different food and gangs which Philly dont even rock gangs.

We know a NYC boul just by looking at them vice versa. Plus people don't understand how small Philly is. Philly is the smallest big city in the country where the top ten cities overshadow Philly by 100s of square miles.

135 square miles same size since the 1800s where Queens alone is 110 square miles... Chicago 224 LA Houston etc...

People from outside the region compare Philly to New York all the time. Yes there different types of cities but they’re incredibly close together compared to most of the major cities in America.

I think most of y'all are saying the same thing.

Philly is comparable to NYC because it's in NYC's shadow. But Philly has it's own indistinguishable culture. At best it might be comparable to Brooklyn.

Only reason the comparison with Chicago and Milwaukee is, Milwaukee is in Chicago's shadow. Lots of Chicago transplants, but definitely a different feel altogether.

Detroit's not comparable, because Detroit is far enough away with its own culture and appeal and has things it's nationally known for.

I say all this as a dude who lived in or around Philly for 30 years, and Chicago for the last 5.

I don’t think you understand what the term “overshadowing” means. Being overshadowed has absolutely nothing to do with how similar or different the cities are with eachother.

overshadow definition:
1.) tower above and cast a shadow over.
2.) appear much more prominent or important than.

Philly is overshadowed because it’s one of the largest cities in America and less than 2 hours away in travel time from NYC. Philly is less important as a city and receives crumbs compared to its larger neighbor NYC.

^^Please don’t be offended by this please!

if there was no NYC, the city of Philly might be what NYC is right now.
