Is Kenny Omega a bigger draw than Sting? Davy Smeltzer seems to be hinting so

lets be honest Sting didnt draw, it was NWO that drew crowds, Sting wasnt wrestling for a whole year, but he did draw merchandise sales 2nd to Stone Cold, blame garbage WCW booking after Starrcade 97

and Meltzer is referring to Goldberg

Dave has a long standing anti-Sting bias for reasons I've never really comprehended. When it comes to him, it seems as if he'll hold him to standards he would never hold anyone else to.

For instance, he constantly blasted him for not drawing as the top guy (in WCW, where questions of who was or was not a draw was largely taken out of your hands if your name wasn't Ric Flair or Dusty Rhodes) and refused to vote him into the WON Hall of Fame, but put Chris Jericho in, a man who has never ever been a true draw as the top guy (remember, at one point Vince thought his Undisputed title run was the worst he'd ever presided over). It just seemed as if he wanted to justify why he didn't want to put in someone he never rated as a worker.

If he is insinuating that Omega draws better than Sting historically, then we can definitely put this in the "Dave's lost his mind" file. Kenny hasn't even had the CHANCE to succeed or fail on the level of Sting.
Kenny hasnt even succeeded on the Freebirds or Road Warriors level...yet along the same galaxy as Sting.

Kenny Omega is the biggest difference making full time wrestler. I can’t see how that’s debated at this point. Sting was up and down as a draw, but the numbers his match with Rollins did should have cast his performance in the 90s in a new light, if people that were broke kids during his height, now spent money to see him as adults.

I absolutely agree with Meltzer here if you understand the context. He isn't saying that WCW sting wasn't a massive draw. He didn't compare that era's sting to Kenny.

The situation is when Sting was with TNA he never drew so much, was it that TNA the problem? Most likely but if he was such a hot ticket why did TNA never draw large numbers with him or hell you can add Kurt Angle to this example.

2 huge stars and main eventers back in their prime that weren't able to draw big when they were no longer in the WWE/WCW.

No the difference here is that Kenny is by large the main reason people bought tickets for MSG last April and the main reason those AEW shows are selling in 15 minutes.

It's not Jericho, the Bucks, Cody, it's Omega. That is clear now, he was the reason NJPW start selling out venues and the reason a no name promotion starting selling out in 10 minutes.

Moxley will help things but overall, Omega has built himself a massive fanbase and I will say that when all things are considered Omega is the bigger draw. If Omega was in his prime in WWE, many would be comparing him to Bret Hart and HBK nowadays

If you put Kenny in Impact he would instantly make them book larger venues as long as he is given freedom of creativity in the ring, I have zero doubts about this.

Yup the thing is sting and Harlem heat are the reasons why I became a WCW fan in the first place. Dude doesn't see sting as a major star and too me he's a cult star at worst not every non fan will know him but he's recognizable.

Absolutely but the main argument is that he did not succeed once out of WCW. So was he a huge draw or a product of his environment?

Fam you can say the same thing about omega we haven't really seen how major tv effects omega. I don't care what anyone says being on major tv 52 Weeks a year can kill anyone's drawing power he hasn't really had to face that yet. While sting was the centerpiece of one of the best angles in wrestling history and has been featured on tv for over 30 years it's really an apples and oranges comparison. I like meltzer but he needs stop and give the man his credit no one's saying he's top 5 but he's definitely a icon at this point.

The people following Kenny which had NJPW world and watched PWG/ROH were watching him over 50 times a year. The G1 alone is a couple dozen dates within a couple weeks. Those watching him that were fans were seeing a ton of his content.
