Greatest guitarist, yes..
I think part of the reason Black music is such shyt these days is cause no one plays any instruments..you cant rush a song in 5mins with instruments, hence why todays music is so disposable.
That's not always the case but I do agree that not knowing instruments
for some artists definitely plays into the wack music they make.
With that said there are people who can play instruments but in Black music
that isn't Jazz or the Blues, instrument playing usually plays the background.
Terrace Martin is a highly talented jazz saxophonist, plays piano and raps.
J. Cole can play piano, produces most of his records and raps.
Oddisee composes and uses session musicians, he also raps.
Quick plays instruments, uses session musicians, he also raps.
And then you've got forward thinking guys like Flying Lotus, Thundercat etc.
There are quite a few black musicians who play instruments and make music
that isn't "Disposable".
And to be fair you can't rush a song in "Five minutes" even if you aren't using a "traditional instrument".
There is still the song writing aspect which means there's a lot of time that gets spent working on that before you ever
step in a booth.
The biggest problem in black music today is the major label system.
Back then they had a tight little network with 106&Park,The Radio and
having control over black artists through the major label system which
limited avenues for exposure.
The internet put a baseball bat to that system.
Without it I honestly think I wouldn't know of the labels and artists I do.
They had the same time crunch problems back then too till a.m. radio came along in the 60's and all the jam bands had space to improvise/expand on shyt..a lot of people from Miguel, Bruno Mars,Jamie Foxx, Marcia Ambrosius etc etc play instruments but there's this attitude out here where u gotta downplay it ADD like it don't matter lol
^This.
Dudes don't know that The Funk Brothers at motown could read
a lead sheet and play a song competently in a few minutes.
It comes from being highly skillful jazz musicians
They only had three tracks in the early days of Motown so they literally
were doing songs in just a few minutes. They couldn't go back and just
edit out all the mistakes or rely on playing over their mistakes
and having them edited out.
You had to be ON POINT.
