Watch it. It’s film history, an example of a production that got way out of fukking control and as a different world showed us, Mammie is an actual person or role in our community worth exploring. Not done well in this movie but do your history on the role of the mammie and it’ll act as a supplement to the movie.

Plus it’s a good movie. Long as hell and but it’s not Ishtar.
Well, I'm already interested...and if you done put your stamp on it :patrice:

I read that supposedly a lot of people threw up theirs arms because he said damn. It's kind :what: at first, but given that period in movies, and this may have featured the first curse word in a movie, I can see it.

Yeah times change man. Remember nypd blue was controversial for showing someone’s ass on broadcast. That’s nothing now. Psycho was controversial for showing a toilet. I love Lucy was controversial for showing Ricky and Lucy sleeping in the same bed.

Yeah man it’s worrh the watch. It was one of those movies my mom loved and I watched with her once as a kid and couldn’t make it lol but I sat through it with her once one Easter and I fukk with it. Are there issues in it socially? Hell yes and it doesn’t quite stand up to social values or equality in any sense of the word but I can watch a movie or like a movie while disagreeing with it’s politics. shyt I love bond movies and they have a history of racism and misogyny. Rampant misogyny actually. It’s the same franchise that had Sean Connery playing yellow face :francis: but I still love James Bond

I gotta ask because this bytch is 4 hours

FOUR HOURS :gucci:

How sad was life in 1939 that people had 4 hours to burn watching a movie in a theater during the workweek? :picard:

lol just split it up if you can

but yeah don't let that stop you, it gives a glimpse into their mindset back then (they really thought they were the victims of slavery)
Yep. The gubmint 'stole' all their wealth without compensation. Their wealth was Negro cattle.

'We used to be rich' .... because they owned 150 human beings. How dare Lincoln impoverish us, they said out loud. Emancipation was wealth redistribution: the 'wealth' was distributed from cacs (we own you) to colored folk (you own yourself). They been symbolically fighting against that ever since.

And fukk the Cherokee. One of the c00nest tribes on Earth.

Life was very sad in 1939. But it was a GOAT year for movies, if not the GOAT.

Nobody wants to live in 1939.

She won an Oscar.
Yea she won for being the greatest stereotype of all time. Was also humiliated to the fullest with not being able to even go to the premier of the movie and had to be segregated at the awards ceremony. Not to mention the fact that her trophy disappeared from Howard university and the academy refuses to replace it. I would wonder why the academy would even choose her as a winner knowing damn well she'd go thru all that but they love those Slave roles

Around Thanksgiving, or Christmas, tv networks usually run it all day, leave it on in the background, and catch some here and there. It's an example of the best kind of technical filmmaking for the time, but yes, racist, sexist and as far as movies go, it's overblown, dreary and an hour or so too long. That's the only way I ever see any of it.

I get the anger but she paved the way for others. And it was amazing she won at the time but Hollywood does love us as slaves .
