I think like Leonard, he has handled his business in ring and outside alligned himself with people that will simply push his career forward (Leonard hiring Dundee was no mistake, Dundee reinforced the Ali comparisons and him being there meant people would accept him as next for Ali's throne a lot easier).
A lot of people don't have both ie the talent and smarts to align themselves with sound people. Tyson shouldn't be whoring himself to the WWE but made so many bad decisions.
Floyd has even found a way of monetising his 'Money Mayweather' persona. After that Oscar 24/7, he had people lapping it up. When he doesn't get into that mode people scream and cry for it (this series of 24/7 with Cotto hasn't been a roaring success, as Cotto has given him few chances to get into that mode) and thus creates a bigger audience for it when he finally does decide to unleash it.
