There are a thousand of these books. Where would I start if I wanted to get down?
The first one. You can honestly only read the first one and simply enjoy the shyt for what it is...pure literary excellence.

"Dune" by itself is great. The visuals, the dialogue, the mythos of that world, everything.

If Hollywood wanted to...they could do Dune over with a really good cast and a really good director and it would be magnificent.

But you already see how these movie studios think based on the Sony leaks. They'd come up with all type of fukkboi reasons to not do a Dune movie, like ruffling religious feathers or upsetting muslims or some stupid shyt.

there are only 6 that were written by frank herbert, the rest are prelude and sequel books written by his son and other people

http://www.amazon.com/Dune-Saga-Chronological-Order/lm/1COADLEGRZEOC

the preludes arent that good but i do think they do a god job of explaining the history of the main books, they fill in a lot of historical gaps, i havent read the sequel books, i suspect they have the same subpar quality as the prelude books

So I read the first one, and really liked it. Feels more like fantasy than sci fi to me, but still great book. Quit during second one. Read the wiki to find out what what happens and I'm glad I quit. Guess it aint for me.

i like all of them

the first 3 are good in terms of plot and suspense and story arc, i dont know why anybody would say they suk

what makes the books great is the blending of philosophy which gives all the story lines a lot of depth and make you think a lot about humanity and what it means to be human

but after the third book, the story line gets hazy and jumps around a lot, there is a lot of dialogue with few actions, i like it but i can see why a lot of people wouldnt
Dan simmons hyperion and heinleins the moon is a harsh mistress are two of my favorites including dune.

We also must not forget fahrenheit and do androids dream of electric sheep.

Big brother is watchin you also a contender.

I think dune has the advantage of being so far ahead of its time

Finished the first 3 books during the summer and it was a pleasant read. I like the intricacy between politics, philosophy and religion and the whole Tuareg-like culture being depicted. If ones like books that triggers the imaginary or depicts other worlds and civilizations, one should read it.
this sentence is a work of abstract literary art

Is Brave New World considered Sci-fi?

Books not mentioned in this thread that I think could at least be argued without getting an automatic :camby:

Orson Scott Card - Ender's Game
John Brunner - Stand on Zanzibar
Philip dikk - The Man in the High Castle
Iain banks - The Player of Games
