IT'S NOT REALLY SENSIBLE TO COMPARE TODAY'S CROP OF COMICS, WITH TODAY'S ALMOST TOTALLY OPEN FREE SPEECH WORLD ENABLED BY THE INTERNET, TO THE OLD COMICS WHO RISKED THEIR CAREERS JUST TO SLIP THE WORD "DAMN" INTO A CARSON SET, BROTHER!

IRONICALLY, INCREASED FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND TOLERANCE FOR VULGARITY HAS MADE THE MARKET TOO SATURATED FOR COMICS TO STAND OUT AS GREATS, DUDE! IF YOU GET A SITCOM, YOU'RE SUCCESSFUL! BUT YOU WON'T SEE THESE GUYS INFLUENCING POP CULTURE OR CHALLENGING SOCIETAL NORMS, MEAN GENE!

You don't know what you're talking about clearly. Dude has an entire lifetime of work, not just one or two specials focused on religion. I'll agree that his last special before he died focused mainly on the farce that is organized religion, and wasn't really funny. But that's hardly the only thing he talked about during his career. Carlin is LEGENDARY, mentioned along side of greats like Pryor, and was funny to a wide range of people. You've made up your mind on him based on one routine when he's done so much more.

He can be legendary thats ok, he's just not all that to me. He's entertaining for a few minutes but I can't watch an entire routine of his shtick. I don't know why you have such an issue with my opinion on carlin.

louis ck is the last of the truly universal comics, chappele could be this too, but it appears he has abandoned it

the rest of these cats have a twitter mentality, cater to your followers

that being said, as hollywood hogan so eloquently put it, having the guts to be controversial is no longer going to make you culturally relevant to the whole country anymore. if george carlin were a 25 year old comic today, he would just be another smart, cynical comic that only some people could be into. he probably wouldnt even fit in with any sitcoms due to his worldview. you gotta be a dumb goof or a quirky hipster to have a relatively broad appeal these days. bill maher is kinda in the same lane as carlin, but he stays relevant by doing political shows, his stand up doesnt have the same reach that his political debate shows have.

and to be honest, louis ck's stuff works so well because it is just as good at drama as it is as comedy, so he can bring in two audiences. something a kevin hart or dane cook cannot do.

how so in regards to Chappelle?

Suprised at that.

Hell, I was too the first time. But Mooney gave no fukks. And the white folks were eating that shyt up. He was tearing into this one white lady in the front extra hard cause she was sitting up there with the :beli: face on while he was doing his set. shyt was so disrespectful yet hilarious, even her man was cracking up. Hit her with like 10 different ways to call her a stank, stuck up, pompous white bytch. The rest of the crowd loved it. Sometimes funny is funny.

Typical bitter aging comic talk.

"THIS GENERATION ISN'T AS GOOD AS THE OLD GENERATION BLAH BLAH BLAAAAAH."

As if most black comics in Pryor's day could work white crowds :smh:

He right though. Which comedian from generation Y can hang with gen X?:usure:

by howso, are you asking about how he was a universal comic, or are you asking why i consider him to have abandoned that?

he was universal cuz the dude was on the shows of james lipton, oprah, anderson cooper, etc. just cuz people wanted to know what he was thinking. only tmz really cares about kat williams' craziness, and really it's just for the morbid curiosity and possibility he might turn up dead. with dave, it's different...

in terms of abandonment, well, he abruptly flew to africa and killed the contract for a new season. didnt even tell his wife he was leaving and he didnt even really finish the season properly and hasnt done another show or scripted comedy movie since.

:what:

You know many comedians are very unhappy and only take joy out of making other people laugh, right?

Word to the show Louie on FX.

I mess with Hannibal, Aziz's last special was :ld: status from start to finish. There's a lot of good 'young' comedians out there but unless you're watching a lot of different shows where they pop up like Mash Up, they're hard to find. I can't even think of 3 to name right now.
