Could it be that now that he built his name up so he has the power to make the kind of music he truly wants to make?1. that wasnt his song.
2. BOB was about as pop as as it gets back then for a rapper.
And features on rap songs don't matter. All Bruno's early solo songs/hits weren't like uptown funk or the music he's consistently been creating since 2015.

if dude was a female everyone would be calling him black
That makes no sense though. Dude was already selling huge records before he started having more of a black sound to his music. And since when is it more beneficial to a career to chase a black sound versus going more the pop route? I would be much harsher on Bruno if he was a struggling artist and just trying to find a lane to become relevant. But when they're already extremely successful and get more power and then decide to go that route that leads me to believe that's the kind of music they've always wanted to make. We all know to get put on most artists have to bend to whatever their record label demands so it's way more like that his original music was done to satisfy the label to get them to release his music.I think you got it the other way around. He makes the music he does because it builds his name up.
He could be successful doing anything but if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. I think the deeper he got himself into his current r&b/funk/rap/new jack swing sound/soul brother imagine the harder it is to get out.
He kinda dug his own grave and he knows it that’s why he started shouting out black artists/producers he copied
