A MOST VIOLENT YEAR is a searing crime drama set in New York City during the winter of 1981, statistically the most dangerous year in the city’s history. From acclaimed writer/director J.C. Chandor, and starring Oscar Isaac (INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS) and Jessica Chastain (ZERO DARK THIRTY), this gripping story plays out within a maze of rampant political and industry corruption plaguing the streets of a city in decay. J.C. Chandor’s third feature examines one immigrant’s determined climb up a morally crooked ladder, where simmering rivalries and unprovoked attacks threaten his business, family, and––above all––his unwavering belief in the righteousness of his own path.

That trailer didn't really make it look like a gangster flick to me. A gangster flick needs a gangster as the protagonist. This dude looked a guy who ran a trucking company who had to deal with gangster by necessity.

But yeah, it looks good.

Jessica Chastain looks like she'll kill it as Cameron diaz/Sharon stone playing Lady Macbeth.

The Dark Knight is gangster flick:manny:

I don't agree, I'd like to hear your argument though. A gangster story has a typical antagonist as a protagonist. It typically shows his motivation for becoming the evil man he has become. In American gangster stories this almost always means coming from poverty and using crime to escape it.

What's your dark knight argument though?

I'd say Dark Knight is a crime movie more than a gangster movie and there's a difference. A crime movie normally focuses on both sides of the law while a gangster flick is definitely from the POV of the gangster like you said.

I'd agree with that to an extent. I think the primary genre is Hero movie (an exceptional person faces extraordinary evil and triumphs), but it is dressed up as a crime movie. Kind of like how Captain America 2 is a hero movie dressed up as a political thriller.
