At the end of the day he's an old boring man that was not the first choice for the majority of Americans and Dems and he was propelled to the front almost entirely based on electability and not being a transformative force.

He is and has been a relic of the very institutions that have allowed themselves to be bogged down and not be reflective of what the electorate wants and needs.

This is a hard truth that everyone needs to accept, the quicker they do, the quicker we can start working on getting his old ass re-elected in '24 instead of the alternative.

And this is the result. A discussion that played out over the top line instead of the values of any specific major initiatives.

In the end you got a lot of water down things instead of a few well implemented and well funded initiatives you can point towards as wins. :yeshrug:

It was a worthwhile gamble. They had 48 Senators :manny: and you also don’t start negotiations half way. It was an Obama era lesson learned.

I'm not opposed to it, but I think it was a discussion they could have had behind closed doors before looking this messy and inept doing it in public.

I can’t really get excited about infrastructure. Infrastructure should be a normal and consistent thing. Celebrating an infrastructure bill is like celebrating having toilet paper because you didn’t have any. I could be wrong. Maybe an infrastructure bill will be enough because i have doubts about getting anything better at this point.

I dont think this or the BBB (Terrible name BTW, should be called the working family expansion act for messaging reasons) will help them. Republicans are going to win the midterms on what they always win with. Fear, white anxiety and culture wars.

Nah, hopefully he doesn't run again and Kamala also doesn't run.

They're food in 2024, the only hope for Dems is an open primary where someone more popular wins.

Imagine being the person out there scouring for someone like Barack Obama or Bill Clinton. Is it that hard or rare to find someone with their level of talent and ambition? Or is it that people like them are just uninterested in becoming President if it's going to be a shytstorm being one?

There is zero reason for him to not seek re-election.

And it makes no sense to open up the field when you're definitely going to lose the House in 22 and you're going to have to fight to hold the Senate. They're going to need to try and hold a chamber of congress and the WH to stop the bleeding.

How do you figure? It makes perfect sense not to seek re-election if you're old and unpopular and will drag the party down.

2022 is a lost cause at this point and Dems are better off in 2024 running someone new with less baggage. Run an open primary and hopefully a younger more charismatic Dem can win.

Someone like who? There are no rising stars in the Democratic party who are ready for the forefront in 2024, just look at the field in 2020.

As the incumbent he has the best shot at holding the WH. And his popularity in November '21 isn't important, it's his popularity in November '24 which matters.

The last admin failed at passing infrastructure for an entire term despite listing it as a priority.

Passing the BIF was less about riling up the base and more about showing you can effectively govern. The alternative, as you put it, means you can't stock your bathrooms and that means you're a failure.

You pass the BIF. Throw a party.
Pass the BBB. Throw a party.
Address student debt. Throw a party.
Then you go back on 2022 showing that you're willing and capable of governing.

If Americans reject that for white angst or black apathy then :manny: Americans were never serious about democracy or building a better country in the first place.

They tried. Manchin didn’t let them.

I don’t know a single one of my peers outside 4 people who have any intention of ever holding elected office. And most of the people who do we’re not well liked. I can see a few people in 5 years or so. But it’s not like it’s some grand goal.
