This is what is stupid - Bharat is already the name used internally in India when speaking Hindi. It's in their constitution - India is the English name, Bharat is the Hindi name.

This is like Germany saying that they are renaming their country Deutschland, or Spain renaming themselves España. It's pure posturing, it's stupid.

India isn't a "colonial" name though, it's been around for 2500 years, far longer than the English people have even existed. It's always been the international name for the region since long before Indians even had a name for themselves (since they weren't an independent united country until the last century).


"Bharat" was originally just the name for a particular region of India. Some people used it for the whole region occasionally, but it wasn't generally adopted by everyone until the Constitution made it the Hindi name of the country in 1950.

Yep. Mobutu did a good thing by renaming the country. But after he was ousted, they brought back the Leopold II name. At least, they kept the cities' names he changed.

Burkina Faso did the same thing: it used to be 'Haute Volta'.

Turkey is now Turkeye.
