I was about to say something like this.
Persians never really called themselves Persians...from my understanding. The Greeks called them that and it spread as a result. So out of convenience to outsiders they said it. But internally, they always said Iran and Iranians.
Take back your original name(s). I think it's a good thing. Should happen in Africa more. They still got lakes and such named after English Kings and Queens.
persia was from persis, which was a province of the achaemenid empire when it had its conflict with the ancient greek city states. persis was where persepolis was which was their capitol for a while. the greeks didn't know a lot about the internal dynamics of the achaemenid empire so they said persian when referring to all of the achamenid empire and the civilizations that existed there in the centuries after.I heard the opposite.
Just like with India, there were several groups of different backgrounds in the area. The modern borders of Iran are were Iranians are from.
There was ancient group called Persians(or something similar)but there were a bunch of others who either migrated to other areas or are just a minority. That’s why so many neighboring countries have similar languages. My coworker from Afghanistan speaks Dari but can speak Farsi but his family is historically from Turkmenistan
also, the exact same thing happened in reverse. the achaemenids thought ionia or "yunan" was the center of the greek civilization and used it to refer to greeks. thats why greece in farsi, arabic, and turkish is yunan or yunanistan
