In terms of music, who is the artist of the 2020s so far?

Music has definitely hit diminishing returns. We've heard everything basically.

Only so many notes on a measure you can hit with timing that sounds good and only so many frequencies and textures available.

Technology came through and hit to field too quick and powerful:
  • Music-making programs like FL Studio.
    • It's basically a full professional studio on a laptop.
    • No need to buy $10k's worth of hardware to make great sounds.
      • Every single person on the planet can now make professional music.
        • That's 100's of millions today vs a few thousand people with the know-how/equipment in the 90's.
    • Software can make energy/sounds through the entire frequency range from inaudibly low to inaudibly high.
  • Streaming apps like Spotify making music instantly available.
Too many different sounds and only so much time to digest it.

This has been a terrible 3 years for music. It’s not innovative or creative. Just blah. As much as I want to hate on the current state of affairs in music, keep in mind that we’re not even 3 years into this current decade. There’s a decent chance that someone new that we don’t even know of yet, will come through and dominate the rest of the 2020’s. Right now Bad Bunny, Taylor Swift & Beyoncé are running this decade, but that could change in the next 5-6 years.

I hope whoever does end up dominating, is someone who is listenable and creative, two things lacking in this current crop of artists. As far as hip hop goes, who the hell knows. That genre is looking like late 80s hair band rock status. The genre needs a re-boot or a new direction. 2023 has been one of the worst years for hip hop in history. The only interesting thing to happen this year is the 50th anniversary celebrations and concerts. Other than that, it’s been complete shyt.

WOAT decade of music and its not even close
We're going on 4 full years into the new decade and we barely have any bona-fide hits.

Even by 2013 we had a plethora of hits that are still getting constant play on the radio.

Anyway to answer the question I'm going with Harry Styles.

Any African Americans you’d consider?
Travis, Carti or Future.

Travis/Carti is more late 2010's.
Future been a mainstay for over a decade.

The answer to this question would've been Young Thug overall had he not got in trouble legally.

Still too early to call, but as of now an artist who debuted in ‘20 and is still relevant/dominating is Olivia Rodrigo.
