cause Michael's alot like Vito. he had no aspirations to become a mobster when he was young. he's a marine & a quiet dude with morals unlike his brothers. in the flashback in part 2, Vito was the same way. just a humble family dude working at the bakery, didn't even complain or accept the gift after he got fired.

and i think it was intended to be kinda like a surprise ending, cause Michael was the furthest thing from a gangster in the beginning of the movie. Sonny was the opposite, hotheaded & got overly excited when Sollozzo introduced the drug trade. Fredo had no mobster qualities, he got embarrassed by his woman in front of his family in the beginning of pt 2

Michael was the one who orchestrated the hit on the corrupt cop and that Sollozzo dude. He knew that Sollozzo had to go since he was the one who had the hit on his pops set up. Just off that attempted hit, Fredo was in shock and on medication. He was useless, that's why they sent him out to Vegas. But when he got out there, Moe Green was boxing him around, putting them paws on him, which meant that the Corleone name was disrespected. No way he shoulda had next.

I'm just in an alternate reality where Sonny doesn't get killed and becomes boss there is no way he will be able to withstand Michael's sociopathic ambition for long. Michael let his ambition ruin Kay, his children, and his brother - why would Sonny be an exception?

Because mike wasn't really bout that life until sonny died and it was forced upon him.

Mike was about that life the second his father got shot. If you want to be really cynical about it you could say Mike saw an opportunity when his father got shot.

I don't know if Mike necessarily saw an opportunity. He knew the Sonny was too volatile and emotional to be a good leader. Mike was cool enough to get the family's respect back on the streets AND keep things rolling so everybody could eat. Sonny wanted to bust guns at every and any body, which was not the way that his pops would have wanted it. Sonny and Fredo were both weak in their own way and not good leaders. I think it was once Sonny got clapped that Mike knew it was time to "come home" and fulfill his destiny.

it was foreshadowed in pt. 2 even when he was a baby. fredo was always sick & crying...he had pneumonia. he was always the fragile one. plus, they claim that Father Stefano molested him. so that could've contributed. he had it rough.

"Michael, you don't come to Las Vegas and talk to a man like Moe Greene like that!" - love that line in part 1...the way he said it. it's a shame John Cazale died so young. he would've been up there with the rest of them.

how crazy is it that every film he appeared in was nominated for Best Picture. :ooh:
