Vince Gilligan has admitted that he and his writing team made shyt up with no idea where they were going with it and would write themselves into corners all the time. He's literally admitted that a lot of Breaking Bad was them winging it. I don't see how you can really be going at @winb83 this hard about making a statement that isn't that farfetched. If you want to argue about the quality of one writing teams improvisation versus the others cool, but arguing about whether some shows are making it up as they go along is pointless, it's been proven to be a fact:

Breaking Bad was a serialized story told in linear fashion. The writers had the liberty to take it anywhere they wanted.

Lost didn't play by the same set of rules. It cheated it's audience. They were giving us puzzle pieces to a puzzle that didn't even exist.

What he said.

@obarth you're the homie but c'mon son. I've linked both of those articles myself at some point, I'm well aware of how "BB" was written.

The major difference between the two is "BB" writers would make shyt up then write towards that. The pink teddy bear in season 2, the M60 in season 5. They'd sit there for months and try to come up with a bridge from where the story was, to the random shyt they'd put in.

The writers of "Lost" made shyt up then wrote towards nothing. And they'd keep making shyt up. This is out of the mouth of a guy that wrote for the show.

So if this was "Lost", they'd do the flash forward like season 5, ep 1 of "BB"....and then the flash forward in season 5, episode 9....and then never mention either again in the finale, which would be totally disconnected from any plot threads laid over the last 5 years....then hit fans with a "it was all about the journey!" disclaimer when pressed for answers.

Now, if you like "Lost" ok cool....but most TV shows aren't written like that, and "BB" definitely ain't.

Breh, in the very post you quoted I said if you want to debate the efficacy of how the two writing teams made shyt up then that's something worth debating. If you feel the LOST writers sucked at making it up as they went along fine. But, out of Gilligan's own mouth is proof that @winb83 is right about other shows making it up as they go along. It's not like I'm just pulling this out of thin air or caping, I'm stating facts. I really have no desire to get into yet another argument over the merits or lack thereof when it comes to Lost. Nobody that hates it is gonna change their mind; same goes with those that love it. But it's disingenuous to respond to @winb83's assertion that most shows make shyt up as they go along(an admittedly hyperbolic statement) by citing a director who who readily admits to the opposite

Technically every show makes it up as they go along by that definition. I don't know of a show in existence that had it's entire arc mapped out from season 1 to the finale. Even if you have a rough outline like "a mob boss goes to see a shrink", "a school teacher becomes a kingpin", eventually you have to fill in the blanks around that.

Basically, every other show had a concept and wrote towards something.

"Lost" had a concept and wrote towards nothing. It was a bunch of arbitrary "cool" pieces that ultimately weren't meant to be examined too closely.

It's not even like I'm shytting on the show by pointing that out. That's just what the show was. Now, I could understand if I made this thread....but dude asked for answers, explanations, etc. before he Googled them. I'd much rather say "hey man, this shyt answers virtually no questions" and have him go into the finale with a clear head than expect everything to make sense and hate the show when it doesn't.

I feel you bro. We all went through it.

I didn't watch it live from the beginning. I marathon watched it on netflix when the show was coming up on it's 5th season so I had to catch up. No other show had ever engaged me like Lost. I was ready to declare it the greatest show ever.

We got took.:snoop:

:dahell: The Original Post reads like an incomplete post. WTF was your question?
shyt read like a Lost script post-season 2 :mjlol:
the only understanding i got from this show is i wasted 6 years of my life watching it
I'm sorry you and millions of others got screwed over :to:

The only people who think less of it are the people that let their expectations get out of hand.
I heard nothing but good about this show prior to watching it. I watched the series in 2012 on Netflix, finished in a month. It was amazing at first (like GOAT show status) and then fell the fukk off. Then come to find out the show has a ton of (well-deserved) hate. I was pissed that I wasted one month on this trash, I can't imagine wasting 6 years :sadcam:

no they weren't. eventually everybody died at different points and times in life. when they all died they all met up together and moved on. the Island and all that stuff happened. some of the people got off at the end and lived the rest of their lives away from it.
