theres three ways to counter a jab with a right hand. the pull counter is a version of the counter right hand over the top of a jab with an outside slip:

l9IjQTX.gif

the difference of the pull counter is on the slip. you dont slip outside the jab to make it pass through the invisible space that you have next to your left ear and over your left shoulder.

you dont slip at all. you turn your right cheek in and jerk your head back and away in one motion:

EUotB3S.gif

yJJ4iyF.gif

imagine a jab being thrown at a point in space and mark it with an imaginary dot. put your head on that imaginary dot as an imaginary jab repeatedly jabs to that point. practice turning your right cheek in and jerking your head back and away as each jab reaches this imaginary dot for several reps. practice with different depths and speeds. try to get a friend or someone from your gym to throw jabs at an imaginary point in space and put your head on that point and practice this motion for several reps and ask for him to change depths and speeds as you progress.

another way to counter the jab with the right hand is a right hand with an inside slip in one motion. the right hand is a unique punch in boxing because its the only punch that causes the head to naturally slip when you throw it meaning that in addition to being a punch its also a defensive move which you use when you throw a right hand over the top of a jab. the head will naturally slip inside and make the jab pass through the invisible space that you have next to your right ear and over your right shoulder:

uu6TNcM.gif

those are the different ways to counter a jab with the right hand. the right hand over the top of a jab with the inside slip in one motion is the fastest, or in boxing terms the most sudden, because the punches in a fight are experienced in terms of their suddenness not fastness, but the pull counter is probably the most psychological because of the way the pull counter can be used with or without a right hand. floyd likes to show a few pulls before throwing the right hand with each pull counter. each time floyd shows a pull on a jab, a fighter has to guess whether or not a right hand is going to come over it, which has the effect of paralyzing them. the psychological effect of the pull counter in general is that it makes a fighter have to guess whether he will get hit with a right hand on every jab, without having to actually throw any right hands.

the fighter who did that a lot was muhammad ali. if you like pull counters try to watch a lot of muhammad ali fights. that pull motion itself comes from ali because ali never used slips.
U really went to work in my thread lol

I was having a convo with Skihat and @PJTech about how I counter the jab similar to that Baldomir gif but Im usually the shorter guy so I slightly level change with that slip and make em run into that right hand. It feels a lot more natural to me but I don't have as much success with it when I'm up against dudes my height, since they're not "jabbing down" at me.:francis: The pull seems perfect for that, I'm going to start working on it. :obama:

I don't know why @cook and @Brooklynzson took off rep, if there was ever a post that deserves rep it's this one.

N'dou caught some beautiful ones. JMM might have caught his most visually satisfying one. Floyd can't do this much more it's a shame, great move.
He was successful with it against Canelo but against Maidana he kept missing badly...

I attribute that more to Maidana's awkwardness than Floyd regressing badly...Sure Floyd's slowed down but Canelo is a straight out the book orthodox boxer...Maidana on the other hand be coming at you like a bull throwing caveman haymakers from awkward angles which you have to be looking out for and throws your timing off...

In each gif when the fighter throws they try to pull back. by the time the pull back they're already within range. So why not throw your shot and then go under and step left. Seems like the only way to not get hit by that punch.

it either gets caught or if it lands it's a grazing shot to the left side of the other guy's face
that kind of counter right hand does that a lot. i call that a clothesline because when a right hand gets caught on a jab they look like two shirts hanging out to dry together on a clothesline. when fighters get caught out on a clothesline together like that, they start digging with their free arm. you probably have experienced that.

the kind of counter right hand you're throwing gets caught on arm because the right hand and the jab came out at the same time. counter right hands over a jab work because as a jab comes back the arm starts retracting in a v shape which lets right hands come over it. your right hand is getting caught on arm because the jab hasn't started retracting. throw the counter right hand on the end of the jab as its retracting. thats how rosendo alvarez knocked down the great ricardo lopez.

vnDsY5E.gif

the right hand alvarez threw was a looping overhand right and not a quick straight right. throw it that way to create more lag to give the jab time to retract underneath the overhand right when you're getting your right hands caught on arm a lot.

Floyd's pull counter is very good but my favorite is James Toney's version of it. All he did was turn his body/waist slightly, use his shoulder to protect himself & kinda roll with the punch & came back with a powerful counter right hand. And JT had variations of this punch whether it was straight or the overight hand. If you were a big right hand reliant fighter JT shut you down easily with this move. This is the old out of shape JT doing this:

JT shuts G-Man down in this sparring session:
