Many progressives adopted their positions as a reaction to the irrational, fear-mongering rhetoric from conservatives against foreigners.
This has been the case since the first big immigration booms in the late 19th-early 20th century. Mexicans are just the current fad in anti-immigrant rhetoric; back then Irish, Italians, and Jews were the focus.
What's interesting is that Bernie Sanders, in his interview with Vox two years ago, said that conservatives are the ones who benefit the most from an open-border policy.

As many health conditions that black people are susceptible to, black people need to make single payer healthcare a primary focus.
