Janet was right up there with him, though.

Why y’all nikkas acting like she was a flop? Lol
When she have an album that sold 66 million copies? Janet was a beast, but in comparison to him, her best album might have competed with Dangerous...

Here we go.

Like I said, Control started everything. Even Whitney fell in line.

And you better look up Janet’s numbers. Janet has more hits records than Whitney does, per Billboard.

breh, I don't care about your little links, prolly written by some dork sitting in his draws.
control is NOT new jack swing, and as great as that album was, it started nothing.

I don't care who has more hit records. whitney was doing MJ numbers and more importantly, was held in higher regard. or is this you responding to that mike/janet comment that I never made?

Control is new jack swing and your lies will not change it.

Janet charted more hits than Whitney because her discography is/was better. Where is Whitney’s Velvet Rope? Her Rhythm Nation? Janet’s catalog is held in much higher regard than Whitney’s. Seriously. How fukkin old are you?

When ppl talk about Whitney today, it’s almost never about the quality of her musical output. It always goes back to her voice. Janet’s Music changed everything and you cannot deny even Whitney was influenced by it.

okay. I'm wasting my time here. you clearly don't know what new jack swing is.

how old am I?? old enough not to expose myself on the first page with that Aaliyah comment. you were pegged from the start dummy.

lol @ velvet rope being some sort of magnum opus.

and for the record, yea I think janet has a better catalog, and I never argued against that. but the question in the OP asks "WHO IS THE MORE IMPACTFUL ARTIST".
and no, Janet's music didn't change much of anything. I mean, there were artists who were influenced, but she wasn't a landscape-changer(you can say that she was in terms of performance tho). she was a prized pet project of jam & lewis with a pre-established name. and no, she didn't pioneer new jack swing. she hopped on the bandwagon after the fact, and CONTROL is NOT new jack swing.

and lol @ the bolded. Whitney isn't for "people today" to go back and revise her status. especially on a hip-hop board, seeing that her music was never catered towards the hip-hop crowd. the bottom line is that she was on a higher plateau and held in much higher-regard. that was all I was saying, and the fact that you don't understand that is telling.

listen, I can tell that youre prolly getting your feet wet with these r&b threads. and that's wassup, but don't swim with the sharks.

Janet.

Whitney has a stronger voice but Janet has a more impactful discography.

If the thread title was "who is a better singer" then it would be Whitney obviously.

I'm surprised @Kerkum ain't in here already

Lmao @ Velvet Rope not being a magnum opus. You don’t know what the hell youre talking about. Like, at all.

First of all, regarding Aaliyah. You clearly weren’t around in the 90s at all and I’m tired of having to repeat shyt every thread because you revisionist contrarian ass nikkas who weren’t around during that time always feel compelled to speak on the shyt you don’t know and didn’t experience. How was Aaliyah not impactful when she put Timbaland and Missy on?? Both of them have said working with Aaliyah got them their big mainstream break. One In A Million was first. Then Ginuwine came. Then Missy’s solo album after that. That was when they blew up. Aaliyah started that chain reaction. They have BOTH said this. And don’t act like Aaliyah was some flop, either, when baby girl was going double platinum in a year, charting #1 singles off AirPlay alone, and was heralded as a game changer and Queen BEFORE she died. Aaliyah is also your favorite artist’s favorite artist. Everybody from Drake to J Cole to Beyoncé herself has acknowledged the impact Aaliyah has had on their careers and the music industry. FOH.

And secondly, nobody is revising history. I said earlier that Whitney’s vocal talent is unmatched. That’s a fact. It’s also a fact that Whitney’s musical output is subpar and has generally been considered subpar/average. This is the same Whitney that was getting booed at awards shows in the 80s for being too commercial and watered down and pop sounding. That’s a fact. When Whitney decided to toughen up her sound later on, she went the Janet route. ALSO a fact.

What you’re overlooking is that Janet’s catalog is legendary and she has three albums easily that will never be surpassed - Rhythm Nation, Control, and The Velvet Rope. I said Whitney wins off vocal talent. But strength of discography??? Janet wins that all day, every day.

:wtf:

Janet is my girl and my childhood crush but Janet was definitely infuential in the dance and performance aspect of the game, and yes she is successful and influential no doubt BUT the #1 knock on Janet was that she was a product of having top notch production.

Whitney Houston is a once in a lifetime talent, who arguably got too big too fast. In fact, Whitney's success opened the door for Janet to even break through that next level. I think the thing most of you guys didn't live through the the 80's so you can't really say what Whitney meant even as far back as the early 80's. Anita Baker herself credited Whitney for helping to open doors for Black female artists.

Now I could understand the answers for Janet because her music definite skewed to a younger crowd and she did revolutionize the music video in her own way unique from Michaels.

Most of Teddy Riley beats sound like some Jimmy Jam and Terry beats...

The production on "Nasty" is as New Jack Swing as it gets.

Janet has more hits and people today/artists emulating her style. Of the 80s music I listen to Janet more. Whitney's catalog isn't still relevant, as much as it hurts me to go against a fellow New Jerseyan.:mjcry:

Thank you. I don’t even care if people think Whitney was/is more influential. But nikkas gotta speak on facts. Lol. That lying, revisionist history shyt ain’t gonna fly.
