If you condense ‘Reasonable Doubt’ down to an ‘Illmatic’ size track list … what tracks would you take off and would it be better than Illmatic?

Is this some sort of gotcha attempt? The recording of the album started in 92.

Also :russ: at dude listing every 4/5 90s album he can think of

Oh my god he was 18 not 17 :damn::damn::damn::damn::damn::damn::damn::damn:

Everybody stop the presses.

BTW Live at the BBQ was 1991. So yes, Nas was a teen when he broke through and Jay was much older when he finally made noise.

"Let both bodies of work and artist stand for their selves" doesn't mean scrapping context around the albums but the complete opposite which @Whips-n-Chains has explained well through out this thread.

Nas was making demos and getting free studio time in 89/90 when Rakim didn't show up

No, it wouldn't be better

RD is a product of revisionist history...classic albums are received as that in real time...if Jigga had a brighter star at the time, I think RD would be as revered in real time and after like OB4CL...but the fact is Jigga was an afterthought when he dropped

Objectively, the 9 best songs on RD are: D'Evils, Dead Presidents, Feelin It, Can I Live, Politics As Usual, Can't Knock The Hustle, Friend or Foe, 22 Twos & Bring It On

No, that's not better than Illmatic...Nas style birthed RD

There are a lot of albums that we consider classic that we were wrong about.

I was gonna say Makaveli but you can play Illmatic at a wedding or funeral and you can't do that with Makaveli
