If you are black and graduated/attended college, did you attend an HBCU?

I did my BA at Morehouse and my MA at Clark Atlanta; loved both experiences; I'm now at a PWI for my PhD and let's just say I'm more than happy I made the decision to do 2 HBCUs; they were both more challenging and more rewarding socially than where I am now

Only applied to 2 schools FSU and FAMU. FAMU was my 1st choice. I got my acceptance letter from FSU, financial Aid, and my apartment set and hadn't heard back from FAMU. the week before I'm set to leave for Tally, the Dean of the Business School calls my house and asks if I'm still coming :wtf: I'm like, I never even received an acceptance letter from yall. I had everything already set with FSU so :manny: But I did want to go to Famu at 1st

Same here breh, I applied to FAMU when Gainuous was still their, never heard from em so I went to FSU instead

I know where this thread is going :beli:, and quite frankly most of you don't know/realize HBCU's are more expensive than "white" schools.

The private ones are very expensive. Some private HBCUs hold more national clout than others (Morehouse, Spelman, Howard, etc).

In Alabama, the State HBCUs are cheaper than the big PWIs with the same (if not better) academics due to smaller class size, etc.

My wife had a similar experience with a different HBCU. It's a byproduct of hiring the wrong people, and it's a major problem.

HBCUDigest.com has an article discussing similar issues:

That’s the thing about little things; they tend to add up and make everything around them seem much smaller when folks finalize realize how much they do matter.

My reason for creating this thread is to hear the different opinions from the coli on HBCUs in the current racially deteriorating climate. I recently graduated from an HBCU. Like one of the other posters, I attended after high school, partied too much & dropped out. Came back years later (despite others telling me to attend a PWI). It was my way of "buying black" so to speak.

bruh, it really is. and the other part was after being up there and meeting people who were attending FAMU at the time...the horror stories regarding not getting their Financial Aid until the FOLLOWING semester :mindblown: and housing being messed up. Listen man, I was BROKE...there would have been NO WAY I could have survived without my aid...and to hear people getting their check for the fall semester in the spring for scary.

a full 4 years at one of the most prominent HBCU in my area (Dillard Univ.) is going to run you about $80,000. Xavier Univ. runs about 100k.

at the nearest PWI (Univ. Of New Orleans) where I attend: $35,000-40000.

This does not include summer semesters, and is based on being a commuting student, 15 hrs per semester, finishing in exactly 4 years.

What am I paying an extra $40,000 for? that's 2 brand new "normal" cars!

Nah. I was accepted to Cheyney University in PA. Didn't go because of the price. Ended up going to a white SUNY school where it was cold as hell. :mjcry:

i thought about it, but 4 year colleges are a damn scam. better nowadays to just get a quick 2 year degree in a booming career field, build up experience while in school with internships, graduate and you'll be straight. I'm in the IT Network Security program myself, plan on getting an internship by June, Certifications and by the time I graduate in 2017 I'll be experienced, educated, and certified if all goes according to plan. :obama:

and best of all I will end up having little or no debt :ahh:
