Well let's make it more believable. The Mexican cartels band together and form a super cartel and then cross the border and murder 1200 American men, women and children.
You damn right the US is reacting the same. Military boots would touch down in Mexico and cartels are going to that big drug haven in the sky.
The US wouldn't kill as many civilians as Israel is in Gaza but there would still be a substantial number of civilians dead because there would be guerilla warfare. It's just that the US has more experience in that situation than Israel does.
And the US military would occupy Mexico for years until the Cartel is defeated.

If the Mexican government was found to be in collusion with this the size of Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, would triple in land mass, that would be justifiable reason to extend the border further out and they'd remove the current residents from those border towns, the energy sector would use that land for fracking, solar farms, wind farms, etc. As well as more water rights in the Gulf of Mexico. Economically it'd be a disaster since many US companies like in the Automotive industry have plants and supply chains in Mexico and take advantage of cheap labor. It'd shift to other industries
