It's like this thread comes around all the time when there's international competiton.

The US doesn't lose because they don't have elite athletes on the pitch. Matter of fact, the guys they do trot out there are usually complemented on their athletic ability. We lose because we don't get our kids world class instruction from an early enough age. Once that changes the US will win major international competitons.

in before the "bbbu..buu.bu you need skills"

if we focused on it we would have bigger stronger and more skilled players, if nikkas in the hood thought of soccer like they did football it would be a wrap.

Adrian Peterson in the midfield :wow:

Most of the top athletes in the NBA and NFL wouldnt be able to crack an MLS roster IE Chad Johnson...

Nah wont win maybe contend, the assumption if LeBron and Kobe chose soccer as youths means the US would have won the last 3 world cups is laughable...

Who the hell said that? :why:

The guys they have NOW can win if they were taught properly from age 7+. The US doesn't have that infrastructure in place nor do they have the proper teachers to do so even if they did.

This would take a couple of generations to come into fruition.

The US would need to scrap it's current model and adopt one like the rest of the world, where kids who are obviously talented in a sport are sent to academies.
This.
If there's a young kid in Pennsylvania who's a soccer prodigy..
His coach is gonna be Danny's dad. A insurance adjustor who helps out after work.

well a lot of those european countries have african nikkas playing on them for one....Spain/Italy like the only decent ones that don't use Africans (I know Mario played for Italy for a bit)

End of the day soccer isn't popular in america and definitely isn't in the black communities here in America. The US will never be good imo...middle class/rich cacs ain't carrying this country to no type of dominance in soccer :mjlol:

most of soccer elites come from poor backgrounds....all they had was that fukking soccer ball to play with :wow:

Germany has one black guy, 2 turkish dudes, the rest of the team is white. They had the most goals at 2014 by a huge margin. I don't think that most of the German national team grew up poor either. They are just surgical, diciplined team

I don't think it's fair to say we could take our best guys from the NFL/NBA etc right now, after training for those sports all their lives, and put them on the pitch and dominate

But what I can get on board with is if guys like Antonio Brown and Derrick Rose (not too tall for soccer or too reliant on being physically dominant for success) had played soccer all their lives instead of their respective sports, so they are learning the skills and their bodies have less mass, they'd be great soccer players

US does have a youth academy. They go to Florida and attend IMG while practicing 2 times a day 6 days a week. They ain't picking the right players.

I don't really have a dog in this fight, but I'm thinking a lot is getting lost in translation here.

A lot of people are looking at this thesis the way OP puts it which is "If the U.S put it's best athletes on the soccer field tomorrow, we would kill everyone immediately" which obviously isn't true.

But if we handled "soccer" the way other countries do, then yes the United States would be elite. But there are a lot of IF'S here. International soccer is ridiculously competitive and has been for a hundred years. This means that as far as coaching and teaching kids the game goes, the U.S is WAAYY behind. Even if U.S has the best athletes they might not have the best coaching. It would take decades for U.S to become a soccer factory. They would have sent their best players overseas to play as youths like they do with Hockey.

Its definitely possible, but a LOT would have to change. It would take years but its possible. You can't win with sheer athleticism alone, but to put it into perspective, if you took an entire generation of would-be American slot receivers, running backs, point guards, and sent them overseas as toddlers to grow up playing futbol, and sent them back to the U.S, you would definitely see a difference in the country's ability to compete internationally.

If you're playing university soccer its too late for you.

By 18 you should be playing for a club.

That's the problem we have in america. The traditional youth league, to high school, to college, to pro, american path to becoming a professional athlete doesn't work for soccer, and the rest of the world doesn't follow that path at all.

In america we still like to think of our athletes as students first (or act like it). The rest of the world doesn't give a fukk if their soccer players can't add 2 + 2 as long as they turn into world class soccer players.

^^ this pretty much nails it. Americans would have to go about soccer like how it goes about baseball. If you're good, you get a contract, no matter how old you are. Cream rises to the top, no school required. Just like how Griffey and Bryce Harper were already crushing shyt in the MLB as teenagers, Messi and Neymar or whoever were crushing shyt in their respective leagues as teenagers.
