Still no doubt about this.
If the A-level U.S. athletes went to soccer, it'd be a wrap..
Euros and South Americans in absolute denial.
More than technical skills it's tactics, discipline and team building. Most African nations have European coaches to this day. The level of professionalism in national staff has to improve from youth level up. Iceland has what, less than half a million inhabitants and they qualified for the euros and world cup. Their players, some of them are semi pro. Made it out of the group stage this euros. That is a behemoth effort, almost defies logic. Damn they drew against Argentina just now. It can be done, look at boxing in West Africa these days.
Still no doubt about this.

Been watching the USMNT for 2 decades. Athleticism isn't the problem. Hasn't been for at least a decade.
The biggest problem with soccer in this country is that youth soccer is too damn expensive; it can cost a couple thousand a year to keep your son playing in the upper echelons of soccer. So the pool of talent tends to be involve too many middle class whites and not enough blacks and Hispanics from poorer neighborhoods. Poorer kids are naturally more driven to be excellent - there's more pressure on them to succeed. If a 16 or 17 year old gotta go to a country like Germany where they don't speak the language to be great at soccer, they're gonna do it because they got that drive. Richer kids stay in their comfort zone and go to college at 18 to play soccer, which is good for them but not good for American soccer.
Also, coaching in this country is generally terrible and unless you grew up hanging with immigrants kids don't play enough pickup soccer.
In other words, get rid of pay to play. Many analysts keep harping on this. Also, I wish people stop bringing up NCAA. This sport has proven that you can't run it like other American sports. This wont happen until soccer stops being an escape from minorities bu white kids.
They essentially pay to keep disadvantaged kids out. Their scared that if they let "poor" kids in their kids wont have anything to play.
If US soccer association wants to get serious, they need to have camps in the summer where kids in every community can learn skills.
This country puts out it's C-level athletes and is somewhat competitive. If this country focused on poverty ball and actually had it's premier athletes playing, every world trophy would be held in this great nation.
If Chilie and Belgium can move up 60+ spots in Fifa's world rankings in a 5-15 year time period while using their best athletes, the U.S. would be #1 in no time if this country even put it's B-level athletes out there..
