im not trolling. the game is about speed and athleticism

bird lacked that nikka

he would get washed in todays game

i hear that. but nash need to thank dantoni for his hall of fame type career and his mvps

Bird had more drive than all the stars today (except maybe Kobe). If he came into the game today he would put in a stupid amount of work and still be great. The defenses he was playing against in the 80s weren't no slouches and the game was a lot more physical. He'd be taking home the scoring title and average like 35 FTs a game.

I clearly said that Bird would still get his, I was responding to this oft-repeated falsehood that the 80s players played better defense than the players now. That's simply ridiculous. Stop repeating what you heard from a bunch of old guys with their nostalgia comments; we've all seen enough tape from the biggest games of the 80s to see the defense that WASN'T being played.

And football and cavemen have nothing to do with basketball.
I dont know why people are so afraid of strategic evolution when it comes to hoops. They'll blindly accept it in football but in basketball they play dumb.

Something would have be really wrong with the sport if the schemes and overall strategic philosophies of the NBA hasn't evolved in 30+ years. Its logically impossible

Every other part of society, yet alone sports, has evolved but the NBA has remained completely stagnant since the mid-80s....thats basically what these nikkas are saying when they keep spewing this "defense was better in the 80s..." nonsense.

I wonder if these dudes even know what exactly Illegal Defense was and how the league abolishing it and replacing it with Defense 3sec was the most important rule change of the last 25yrs.

Packing the paint is the NBA defensive strategy forcing coaches to rethink their offense - Grantland

I haven't read past the first page yet but I really hope there isn't anyone acting like the league is significantly more athletic now than it was in the 80s.

Here's something to remember: Bird only shot about 1 3 point attempt per game in his career. He's a top 3 shooter of all time. His points and efficiency would go through the roof in today's NBA where the 3 point shot is much more emphasized. And that's ignoring the rest of his game.

I think when everyone thinks of "today's league" they think of Lebron, as if he's a good example of the overall athleticism of the league. fukkouttahere. Just because a player doesn't stack up to Lebron athletically doesn't mean he's not athletic. Bird faced just as good of athletes in the 80s as the players in today's NBA are facing now.

Bird would be the 2nd best player in the league now (a true testament to Lebron's greatness) by a wide margin. Durant wouldn't even be in the conversation.
