I don't understand how people can watch a player of similar skill and athleticism like carmelo anthony and think larry bird couldn't make it in the nba today in fact I would argue that bird is a better passer rebounder and defender

A lot of people in this thread are just sooo direspectful!!! Bird had what many players in the 80's and 90's era had something called high b-ball iq and toughness both physical and mental. With how the game is played today he would be Lebron minus the athleticism his numbers would be something like 21ppg 9rpg 6apg 2spg 1bpg shooting with high efficiency and using his size to create mismatches on the block and the iq and court vision to execute high percentage plays from the block. His career would also be extended because he wouldn't get punished nightly playing against the prison ball pistons and knicks squads.

he'd be bird but with better numbers...defense in the 80s n 90s...a whole lot better than to day...he could flop his way into springfield...

his back would last a whole lot longer

fukk outta here. Defense in the 80s was nowhere near what it is today, especially on the perimeter. And Bird didn't play any significant time in the nineties, so that's moot.

Bird would still beast, still put up numbers, still be All NBA and all of that, but he'd face a lot more difficult perimeter defense. Gone are the days when the point guard can dribble all the way to the free throw line before he starts getting defended.

gone are the days where there is an intimidating big man in the paint that made you think twice before you go to basket. Gone are the days where players can re route you on the court using their forearm and other means to stop you.

With his release, his shot is never getting blocked and he would be taller than anyone trying to guard him. So he would be just fine today.

that's how defense against rondo looks.

steve blake can drop 15 a night when given playing time. Now bird wouldn't get points? 80's athletes were flabby and sick?

c'on look at 40yrd times in football....not much has changed since the days of deion sanders, bo Jackson, and Hershel walker. And those dudes were athletes to the core.

That bigger, stronger, fast mess is crap! We don't chase down animals on foot for survival. If anything we are probably slower compared to caveman times in terms of sprinting! I think endurance is probably better for man today.

I clearly said that Bird would still get his, I was responding to this oft-repeated falsehood that the 80s players played better defense than the players now. That's simply ridiculous. Stop repeating what you heard from a bunch of old guys with their nostalgia comments; we've all seen enough tape from the biggest games of the 80s to see the defense that WASN'T being played.

And football and cavemen have nothing to do with basketball.
