touch/body awareness and raw athletic power are two different things. basketball is a duality of explosive movement and more carefully executed, delicate, finesse movements. a good question you can ask is why kareem can sky hook effectively but more powerful, more explosive big men in this more athletic era of basketball cant. why cant more powerful, more athletic big men like dwight howard move with the same grace and awareness as the less athletic tim duncan. one answer is that powerful, explosive movement is contradictory to soft, delicate, graceful movements. this, to me, would make some sense.
westbrook, whos decent now at shooting from about 15 feet, must come to full halt to get off that shot. he must switch his body from an explosive state to a more mindful and ultimately softer, more delicate state. his shot still looks very hard and stiff. it doesnt have that characteristic softness or smoothness that a true shooter has. i would never expect westbrook to have a shooting touch like kobe, who has softer and smoother body movements. kobe consequently has a shot variety that i dont think westbrook would ever have, as hard and as explosively as he likes to move.
i wouldnt expect wall to have it either, since his whole style is oriented at being powerful and explosive vs soft and delicate
