His comment is racist.

However I have no problems with us keeping fictional characters the way their authors intended.

We can't complain about black fictional characters being whitewashed in film but expect black people to play Asian or white characters.

Are we against whitewashing or not? If so then naturally logic should tell us we shouldn't complain about the opposite then.

Asian characters should be played by Asian actors black by black and so on...

I don't want a white man playing my favourite black fictional characters so I'd be a hypocrite to complain about the opposite.

As absurd as this comparison is, look how many up votes it has.

Tony Robinson from to kill a mockingbird would have been a better example.

I wouldn't want a white man playing him. Or a white woman playing Storm in X-men.....

Isn't Roger Moore a sodomite? And the whole Idea of James Bond is antiquated anyway. Why would a black man want to the queens dirt?

Exactly.

Thank you.

Instead of trying to force black men into these outdated cac roles why not focus on making more Luthers. I.e roles for black men.

I personally don't have a problem with his comment but instead the way he phrased it. We're not afraid to say "its because so and so isn't black" so why should he be afraid of saying "its because he's black".

At the beginning of mean streets
Why do we want a black Bond? Let's get our own shyt. And yeah, Bond is supposed to be a white guy, Idris is an African immigrant he's only pointing the obvious. That should only fuel black Hollywood to do they own shyt. How long can you audition for these white studios and maintain your dignity? Haven't they had enough?

If he had said 'because he is black' I would have no problems what so ever.

We complain about biracial people taking on black roles (when a fictional character is a full blood black woman and replaced by a biracial woman). We complain about white washing so we can't advocate the opposite.

If a role is for a dark skin person: choose a dark skin person.

Mulan isn't meant to be played by a white woman etc. and that's fine.

I can understand both sides of the argument. Personally, I think fictional characters are fair game. Characters get re-imagined all the time. Daniel Craig Bond is actually a re-imagined Bond (blond hair Bond?) Bane in the comics is Latino, but in the TDKR he was white, no one really complained about that. Brandy as Cinderella was amazing. Starbuck from Battlestar Galatica was a man in the 70s version, but a woman in the 2000s version and was one of the most memorable characters on the show. IMO unless race (or even gender) is central to a fictional character, I don't really care who plays it.
