Cube is a legend but sadly he turned out to be a clown.

He (along with NWA) was the face of negativity in rap....I'm not even holding that against him because #1 he was a teenager and #2 there was no way to know how big gangsta rap would become.

However, after distancing himself from it and changing up his content ("Death Certificate", etc.) he went back to goofy, over the top gangsta shyt with that Westside Connection nonsense. Which I've always criticized, since day 1.

But now he wants to enlighten people, after he made his money off the very thing he's criticizing. Clown shyt.

Fred.

Why should these young dudes listen to them, when old rappers were on the same shyt until they got money?
Because the old rappers have 3 things that the young dudes don't: experience, wisdom, and knowledge. Hov did that so the young dudes wouldn't have to go through that.
If the youngsters did listen, then so many of them still wouldn't be getting jerked by 360 deals 30 years after old rappers started complaining about shady labels.
We were all young once, and we all went through that phase where we thought we knew more than the old heads. The perced out, leaned out, skinny jeans wearing rappers today are no different. Like you said, all the youngsters see is the bag, and instead of soaking up the game from the people who came before them, they'll keep marching blindly into the traps that the older cats are screaming for them to avoid.

You said a whole lot of nothing

Ice Cube wouldn't have his bread without the fukkery, and be able to transition to movies

Do you think if God himself came down and told him you can do your life over, but if you dont do the Rap bullshyt, you won't be as successful?

You think his ass is turning it down?

I agree that rap is bad for the community, but it's not the main driver

And no one wants to hear from a dude who got his money being dirty to stay clean

That's why Cube (and the other people that I mentioned) are speaking out.
The problem is that when those people share their viewpoints, their critiques get met with "he mad gangster music back in the day", "he's a scammer", "she's old & out of touch", "it's just entertainment", and a bunch of other deflections.
The old guys who are speaking out aren't being listened to because the music still slaps.
Meanwhile, the fire is still burning. We don't care, though; we just want to turn up.

But is telling us that there is a fire actually doing anything. Again, we're consumers. They are actually inside the burning building and have been for quite some time. They occupy the same spaces as the arsonists. Cube creates content beyond music.

Jewish people aren't letting any lyrics mentioning them slide if they even hint at flirting with antisemitic tropes. Black artists are openly trafficking in uncut anti-Blackness in their lyrics and Black people's response is "we just need to look at this as entertainment"

Didn't Special Ed basically said the same thing? Meek said it himself, labels pay them more to push poison music instead of thoughtful lyrics.
They're all đź’Ż correct. But at the end of the day, brehs not standing on morals and principalities... They sell the product, profit, and go about their business until it doesn't work for them any more. Then all of the sudden, "it's the label's fault"

I actually said a lot, but I guess it went over your head. You're like the young boys, all that matters to you is that Cube got his money from gangster rap. If you changed your perspective you would see that because he's been in the business since the late 80's, he has a lot of insight and knowledge that could help save some youngsters. He's trying to share that insight now, but all the kids are saying in response is "you made gangster rap too". The kids only see the bag, and that's why the warnings go unheeded.
Your last sentence is a part of the problem, too.
We have a REALLY hard time separating the message from the messenger. Who cares if Cube's music was dirty? His message still has creedence. The music that Cube made back then has nothing to do with the insight that he's sharing TODAY.

Because they occupy the same spaces as the arsonists, they have a closer view of the evil being committed. When they choose to speak out on what they've seen, we should listen.

Hope this makes artists now put out better music for the consumers, regardless how much it sells. The drama, violence and all the other messy stuff sell because they want to be entertained. it's never about music anymore.

The messenger absolutely matters, especially when he’s not saying anything new

Rap music is bad, and the bad shyt gets pushed

People have been saying it
I can agree with the message and toss Ice Cube to the side, and there are plenty of other people saying the same thing who haven’t benefited from it
