It’s a good pickup, but you guys are 2 starting pitchers away from joining us. If Steinbrenner gets off his ass and brings Shohei or the new Jap in then you guys will be cooking.

Hell the old Yankees would’ve signed every top tier available FA :heh:

I get it though, the luxury tax is a beast that keeps deep pockets honest.

Not really. The Padres wasn’t going to be able to afford to resign him next year anyway. At least they’re getting something back for him.
That man is going to want 40M+ a year for 12 years. Who is paying that?

I don’t like the trade especially if it’s a rental.

Gonna be interesting to see how they set up in the lineup. Who is protecting who. Should be fun as hell next season.
2nd has been Judge’s spot in the order since 2018 aside from 2021 but I think it’s time for him to move off that spot. Judge should he hitting after Soto either 2-3 or 3-4. There’s no reason Judge should have as few RBI’s as he does relative to the number of homers he hits. The issue has always been a lack of at bats with men on base. That won’t be an issue with Soto hitting in front of him.

It’s 1 batter and 1 starter they need provided Nestor and Rodon both bounce back. It’s not even the tax that’s the issue. Hal lacks the passion for baseball that George had to get involved when what they’re doing isn’t working. If he had a good general manager they could contend at 200 million instead of spending most of the year in last place at $289 because Cashman spends the money horribly and 30-45% of the payroll is tied up in essentially dead money on any given year.

I wrote off Rodon and Nestor returning to form honestly. I’ve seen enough out of both of them to get the feeling they aren’t getting their “stuff” back to where it was. Useable arms? Sure, but not pseudo ace quality that they were throwing 2 years ago.

They don’t need a 2.44 and 2.88 ERA to be good enough like they had in 2022. You could add half a run to each of those and they’d have spectacular numbers still. I expect Nestor to be in the mid to high 3’s which is fine. Rodon lost the heat on his fastball and only really threw 2 pitches last year so I think that there’s a real possibility he puts up close to his numbers with the giants, but I don’t expect him to match them all the way playing in that stadium. He was also never healthy at any point last year and it was obvious to basically everyone who watched him. I’ll be shocked if he isn’t healthy by this spring.

Baseball needs to stop pretending some guys aren't better at driving runs in than others. Judge with the Martian and Soto ahead of him will drive in 130-140 a year, but because they try to milk out an extra AB a night, he's up there with no one on and it leads to nothing but solo shots.

Matt Olson drove in 139 because the Braves weren't thinkin "heyyy let's bat him 2nd".

The grades are coming back fairly well that NY didn’t give up anything super valuable for the rental. You never know if you guys make a deep playoff run he might sign a reasonable contract with the 2nd largest fan base in mlb. He might not necessarily even want to sign a high dollar contract with a competitor since he already has a ring. :manny:

He either wants to compete with a great team on a reasonable contract, or sign with the reds for $65mil per year over the next 15 years :heh:
