It didn’t set them back though. They went into opening day 2018 with a lower payroll than 2017 and spent more in the winter of 2018 on Happ, CC, Hicks, Gardner, Ottavino, Britton, DJ, & Gio than Harper & Manny got put together ($69 million to $56.6 million).

I hate when teams do this. It basically never works out and teams wind up spending more for worse players and less production.

My Tigers did this when they let Scherzer walk, only to spend more per year for Jordan Zimmermann and Mike Pelfrey a year later.

Spend on the stars and rely on your scouts/development to find quality role players for cheap. Do not spend big money on mediocre players.
