iight so I just started college and shyt. I'm majoring in Business but what I really want to do is something/anything music related. Whether it's working for Def Jam, blogging, A&R'ing or that type of shyt. I've seen that lifestyle and it's something I'm interested in.

So what I want to know is, what would be a good major for that? Let's say I stuck with business, what particular field would help me get in there after I graduated? Should I switch to a journalism major or something? Help me out coli brehs.

its all about who you know...when i was back in the Northeast I did some work for The Source for a little bit. I'd contact them...they seemed pretty open to getting interns in there and all that.

A&R has to find acts and help in the development of the final album.

They also give street dudes these positions, it cut down on engineers getting slapped around and dudes harassing the office staff.

Someone acting a fool at Atlantic Records, they give Kinky B a call. Because its in Kinky B's interest for everything to go smoothly. The industry is not as cut and dry as you think, you gotta useful to them.

i wouldn't waste my time trying to work in the music industry. it's all just a joke. probably have a better chance working in a rock or country station. hiphop is just full of devils doing devilish things. i'd rather put my energy on something that rewards hardwork and not who you know or whether you're part of the agenda being pushed.

Take it from someone who has worked in the industry. I would say in College have a business major but also get into some type of specialty. Like Maybe Business & Computer Science (Programming, Web design, Video Editing, UI &UX Design) Learn a real skill. That way you have a skill set that makes you stand out.

Step 2: Get an Internship. Apply Major labels (SONY, WARNER, ETC) And also smaller labels too. I had my first internship at Badboy, but you can try any other label. When your interning treat that job as if everyday was you last day. Go above and beyond on everything that you do meet and see what you can do for people. Treat artists like regular people. DONT BE A GROUPIE, ASK FOR A PICTURE, ETC. People wont take you seriously. No job should be viewes as too big or too small.

After months of internship there may be an opening with the company. Take it and run. Meet People, learn who really has the power to advance your career. Treat everyone equal. Remember most people in the industry all care what you can do for them, so always have that leverage that they need you. Once you need them its usually a rap.

As far as being an A&R thats probably the hardest part to get into straight outta college and really a big Label like at Atlantic only has 2-3 A&R's thats it soo keep it a goal but see what you can that they need that way you get your foot in the door. My boy Riggs was just Named VP of A&R at Atlantic (he worked at Shady Goliath)

Journalism is good but again too common and doesnt offer labels real value. Look at it this way Would a label rather have someone who could write a story about their artist or someone who can edit an put together a promo reel for an artist's upcoming Album???

NOTE: You will soon find out the Music industry is probably one of the cheapest industries to work in so if you want to stack paper, I would suggest you go into Technology, Finance, areas instead of music. A entry level paying position you might get 10-13 per hr if your lucky. Also you don't get paid for internsip so have a weekend job or side hustle to support yourself. Also never ever complain. NEVER EVER COMPLAIN. Stand out meet people offer to help out everyone. Even the security guard. You never know how they can help you in the future
If any questions I am here

NOTE 2: Also keep an ear out to all the latest music even up and commers. Someone might ask you "who's hot right now?" Give honest answer dont say your man's name if he doesnt have a real buzz. Don't have any realtionship with that person or if you do be up front.

If you wanna be a college rep for G-Unit let me know

Also if you want to do the blogging thing. Start a blog or website now that way when you apply for internship a couple semesters into college you have some kind of track record. But honestly the blogging game is super saturated. Theses are the best areas for Music if you want my honest opinion

Solid Business Mind & Marketing. (Google Anaytics, Digital Marketing Campaign, Neilsen Soundscan, BDS, etc)

Video Editing and Shooting Music Videos (Learn Adobe After Effects and build a Portfolio

Graphic Design Web Design, Etc ( Learn CS5 Photoshop, Illustartor, In Design Fireworks (This is a big one)

IT- Learn about Networking , Computer Diagnosis

Finance & HR - Learn Expense Reporting, Policy and Procedures

I'm trying to get an indie band some funding, I don't know how to go about it. Should I make a GoFundMe?

GoFundMe is cool but 99/100 you prolly wont make a dime. Now does your band have a following? Do you do shows. What is your goal. Is the band generating money now/

Music is a weird thing cuz in reality unless you a big player in the game music doesnt generate shyt as far as money. What value does a band a rapper really offer?? None unless they make some catchy song are hot for a year and dissapear off the face of the earth. I am not being negative just telling what I have seen. Now if you and your band a really passionate about your music then go all out. Would you risk being completely broke in order to pursue your dreams? If the answer is no, then I say find something your really passionate about. Ones with a plan B never achieve Plan A.

I can kinda play the piano and flute. I'm not tryna get in as an artist. Just something in the industry. Whether it's working at a studio, interning for a while, etc.

So someone like Elliott Wilson is broke? What about the bloggers from sites like hiphopnmore, complex, etc. that go to different cities, states, countries for events and that type of shyt? Cause I love hip-hop so much. I breathe this shyt.

Complex is just a project for Marc Ecko. It Generates millions in revenue but at the same time the sites cost alot to maintain and generate content. Elliot Wilson has been in the game prolly 20-25 years and he makes decent money with Rapradar, but remember Rosenberg and others invested in that and its not really a cash cow.

Have a real focus of what you wanna do. Remember if you chase the dollar you will not last in Hip Hop at all.

Use school strictly for BUSINESS & fukk WHATEVER ELSE THEY TEACH YOU ABOUT MUSIC...

You need 1 thing in the entertainment industry to survive & thats the ability to NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK... without the ability to NETWORK it doesn't matter what you do...

NETWORK YOUR ASS OFF... HUMAN CAPITAL IS WORTH WAAAAAAAY MORE THEN ANYTHING ELSE IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY BECAUSE YOU GET PAID ***OFF OF YOUR RELATIONSHIPS***... I CANNOT stress that enough...

where u work at
