GOAT level album. Not my #1, but I have no problem with this opinion.

I just came in here to say that Illmatic is overrated as a hip hop album. It's a collection of dope rhymes and beats, but don't have the characteristics that make an album GOAT status or even timelessly captivating.

Do yall really revisit that album like that? It's great, but in a boring way imo.
Illmatic is a combination of:

  • All star producers coming together
  • Rap prodigy with real, earned hype
  • The end product coming together so well
You kinda had to be there, and, if you're from the West, you probably don't get the vibe as much as people in the Northeast. Illmatic is like the Canibus hype handled correctly. I even have to give Serch credit, even Nas' contract situation was handled exactly right.

In real time on the west, I remember first seeing the Nas "It Aint Hard to Tell" video on Yo MTV Raps & Rap City.

In real time I thought Nas was the greatest lyricist I'd ever heard rap. I was mesmerized as a teen honestly.

It's more of my older perspective as a Hip Hop fan and understanding what makes an album timeless and obsessive. The mood, feelings and emotions it can continue to bring out of you. shyt that can uniquely touch your spirit and soul. Maybe it's dark, gritty, soulful, bombastic even. Something that gives the album unique character.

I just feel like Illmatic don't have that enigmatic 3rd dimension that other GOAT level albums in the genre have. It's an album with great beats and impressive rhyming though. It's not lost on me how much some folks can truly love it. And if Nas is your favorite rapper, I wouldn't try to change your mind.

Aside from the otherworldly lyricism a bunch of producers aint get on a single rap album like that before Illmatic. Thats one of its many influences that aint talked about enough.
