Eagles ‘blown away’ by Jalen Hurts
The Eagles have only had backup quarterback Jalen Hurts on the practice field for a little less than a month, but already, they apparently really like what they see.
Speaking Tuesday on NFL Network, former Eagles college scout and current NFL analyst Daniel Jeremiah said he has heard the team is “blown away” by what they have seen from the second-round pick so far.
"I am excited to see what they do with Jalen Hurts. All reports I have got out of Eagles camp are that they have been blown away with not only, everyone knows how athletic he is, but just how smart he is and how much of a professional he is. He just carries himself like a veteran. Everybody on the team has fallen in love with him,” Jeremiah said. “How are they going to use him? I know Taysom Hill is kind of the template some have used for him, but I don’t think he’ll get that much volume (of touches) that Taysom Hill got. But I think they’ll find spots.”
Hurts has had a strong start to the padded portion of Eagles training camp. He has looked calm in the pocket, quick when he has decided to run and has displayed the ability to throw a nice deep ball. He has also been extremely effective in the red zone, running in three touchdowns on Tuesday and throwing for two more on Monday.
What stands out most about Jeremiah’s comments are how impressed the Eagles seem to be with how smart Hurts is, which presumably means how quickly he is picking up the playbook. All offseason the Eagles have stressed that it is going to take time for Hurts to pick up the offense, considering he didn’t have a true offseason with OTAs and minicamp. As a result, however, Hurts did spend plenty of time in the playbook studying. It seems that is already paying off, clearing one of the biggest hurdles rookie quarterbacks face when they make the transition from college to the NFL.
The question now is if the Eagles are so impressed by Hurts, how long will they keep him as the third-string quarterback?
As much as the team likes Nate Sudfeld, Hurts was a second-round pick for a reason. If they are blown away by what they have seen, and feel comfortable with where he is at with the playbook, it is hard to imagine Hurts remaining the backup for much longer.
He’s the jets problem now. Our receivers look good nowMan Joe Douglas picks starting to look worse and worse as time goes
