DBZ definitely has that nostalgia factor, and most shonen probably wouldn't be around without it, but objectively YYH is better written and has better fights.

I loved Yu Yu Hakusho

I love DBZ as well but realize there was more that could have been done with the series.

Really wish they would have left Goku dead for a while(still eventually bring him back but after a couple arcs) and let Gohan get some shine. Could have worked the series a lil and have Gohan meet Videl earller and he could have gone on adventures with her, Trunks and Goten. that way Trunks and Goten could have more believable reasons for turning Super saiyan instead of "I got mad"

Yeah, supposedly Toriyama was originally intending to keep Goku dead after the Cell Arc, but the Japanese fans complained so he brought him back.

The thing is, Yu Yu Hakusho slowly builds up and then peaks at the Dark Tournament. After the Dark tournament Yu Yu turns to shyt. They start overdoing it with the flashbacks and getting overly dramatic trying hype up how sad everything is. DBZ is more steady and consistent.

I love them both and can't pick one over the other. I will say though that I would take the Frieza saga over any of the arcs in YYH. It's just incredible, but as an entire series YYH may indeed be a bit superior

Hakusho is the more fleshed out coherent shonen that pays much more respect to its support characters, introduces borderline seinen themes that should be kin to a plot about battles with the world on the line and wastes less time with nonsense dialogues and random power ups
