I just realized that the NBA moved the awards ceremony to after the playoffs

I OD'd calling him the Jim Buss of commissioners

How is this a great move though?

Well, let me say first: If I was working on this decision, I'd shift the voting to match the timing. If you want to crown it after the season, you should be incorporating the post-season.

It would certainly be a bias for players on teams that ended up in the finals (and moreso for those who WON) but whether that is better or worse for the award is a larger debate on preference.

This move, specifically though is aimed at creating more events, more coverage, and more attention on the NBA (and specifically the individual players) in the off season.
  • It's scheduled for the week after the draft, which means you're extending chatter about the NBA beyond that draft, which is when league hype tends to die off.
  • It makes the award less of a foot-note, and more of an event, akin to the draft or the HOF inductions.
  • Instead of the awards leaking out ahead of time (in theory) the NBA will announcing them on TV, giving it a broader reach - especially to foreign countries/fan bases.
  • And while the mystery will probably not surround the award as it does, say, the Oscars... you will see a parade of NBA faces and speeches, which have historically been some of the best parts. (how dope would a Jamal Crawford speech be?
Now again - I"m not necessarily saying I'm 100% behind the way they're doing it, but the AIM is pretty obvious. The NBA is a player's league, unlike the nfl, unlike hockey, unlike baseball. They are capitalizing on the individuals and broadening their starpower (especially for ROY/6th man/dpoy).

On a larger scale, this commissioner has pushed the game in a progressive direction befitting a sport dominated by black men. Stamped out a racist owner. Offered more transparency with suspensions, with the draft, with rule changes. He's expanding and improving the D-League, and giving more jobs to players, and increasing teams' abilities to hire more players, keep tabs on them, and give them game experience.

I have a lot more thoughts -- he's not perfect, nobody is. But I think he's doing a great job pushing the league forward, he's got a vision, instead of just serving owners.

NBA is trying too hard with their award show shyt, it has been a failure so far and when the internet leaks the winners before the show..it will be a failure again.

Finals MVP isn't a playoffs MVP. Otherwise guys like Iggy and Kawhi wouldn't have won.

Finals is the one that counts the most....What if you have one player who dominates the first 2 rounds and someone different who dominates in the finals who you give it too ? Iggy won because his teammates were ass in the most important series,ur idea would be to give Curry a finals MVP for playing well against weaker opponents in the first 2 rounds and overlook what he did in the finals NOPE :camby:

I can't say that Westbrook won't respond like that. Westbrook is probably a top 10 most emotional player in the history of the league. If Harden wins it, I could certainly see that elevating the fukk out of his effort at the very least.
Westbrook I can see spazzing out like that.

Do it commish :mjcry:

The MVP award is for the regular season and it should be issued out after the regular season ends. It creates great drama. I remember David Robinson getting the MVP and Hakeem was the real MVP that season. Hakeem murdered that boy in the playoffs.
