Do you use fruity slicer? What do you do in terms of the chopped sample? (1/6 beat, 1/4 beat, 1/2 beat, etc.)
i did fruity slicer on the beat i'm almost done with...shyt is choppy as fukk like a cheap primo beat lol. i just played around with the times honestly..i switched it around until i got a sound that at least translated into something when i played.

i use my computer keyboard and have no musical acumen when it comes to actually playing it out so i'm not really competent in that arena yet so my shyt basic as fukk

In the same boat as you, breh. Using your computer keyboard is fine, though. Do you just sample out of edison then?

i made sure to link my sample folder into the program so i dont have to search around much.

i use audacity to rip the sample and ive been leaving them raw and untouched until i need them. then i'll open up in edison and trim out what i want.. easy edison trick with that is to highlight and Trim what you want then save it as a unique file (like add a number 2 or something to it) and then Undo Trim and continue on from there trimming your spots out.

i dont think the sample i used in my one beat is on time or even like 4 or 8 bars but i'd say to make it easier make sure you have a 4 bar sample...

Once i have Slicer on i just fukk around with the sounds until something makes sense...start with like or two sounds and then i expriment with filling in stuff around them...

The joint i'm working on is mad choppy and has some dead space in it so i tried to fill it in a little with a light synth to add to the melody and thick bass to cancel out some of the empty spots.

I really dont know what i'm doing though :manny:

Every step i take forward i feel like i take a few backwards as well.

so is your computer dead?

you are starting out so my advice is to continue exploring and maintaining a curious approach. i have severe severe (2 severes) beat block. being curious is the only thing that keeps me turning on my mpc or chopping samples, etc --- is just thinking "i wonder what this sounds like" or "if I add these effects how will this sound"

when you are firing on all cylinders you have ideas and music in your head that you just can't wait to get out.

.i had a good run not too long ago where I had so many ideas and I had so many samples chopped up, id put 2-3 tracks down and time would just fly by because i was so involved id have to force myself to shut the shyt down and come back tomorrow.

the beginning is where you should be having the most fun and making the most mistakes. think of something wild like a drum beat that makes you want to kick in someones door, or a dark bass line that makes you want pull up at a light and start bussin, or a crazy amp'd up brass melody or something then build around it. point click and paste some chords and melodies together in the piano roll with a deep bass or brass, rhodes or something explore the stock sounds you have- start having fun.

when you find yourself kind of burned out. just put together some dope drum patterns and save them then for later when you feel burned out or out of ideas you can pull them up and build around them

luckily nah its not dead (yet)..i never had a blue screen before though and i'm not sure what caused it...i had been using my FL Studio for like a week or two and have had it for months...i'm not computer literate so i cant really say.

i'm definitely in that early hungry stage...it just sucks because ive rapped for a trillion years and it comes so easy to me...but with production i'm like an infant..i want to do so much but my brain cannot process it all to make any sense of it... all of the code words and special vocabulary completely goes over my head. i dont know what ANYTHING means..so when im watching or reading tutorials i'd say about 20% of it actually makes sense to me at this point...so i have to just keep repeating everything until it becomes second nature.

my ears are changing though. i would hear a record and only hear things the way they were played out..like i'd hear a 4 bar loop and think ok thats basically it...but now i'm hearing all of the possibilities that came come from the most random sample.

i made a beat out of a random Black Sabbath sample and its the most boom bap shyt i've done so far and sounds nothing like the actual song..

this shyt def gives me even more of a respect for my producer friends. i know so many people that can churn a hot beat out in damn near minutes and it takes me weeks to even say i finished a beat. its fun, but very difficult at the same time.

learning the code words and the vocab is crazy because all those 'things' you want to do have a name and as you learn and keep creating you know when you want to 'pitch shift' vs when you want to 'time stretch' but right now you just think "i want to make the sample faster" or "i want it to sound faster but still be the same tempo"

that why i recommend atleast one piece of hardware to beginning producers because its always going to come with a manual and the manual has the terms and definitions and pretty relevant explanations for the shyt..with fl..i know there is a help section or a manual i just imagine its 2000 pages long because the program is damn near infinite. whereas an asr-10 or an mpc, or an sp404 had a manual that was maybe over 100 pages and could be read fairly quickly and on the toilet or whatever and had a pretty good index so if you were looking for something specific it isnt/wasnt too hard to find.

Sit on it and experiment. I came from the MPC so it wasnt that hard for me. But sit on it and play with the plug ins. When i started with FL Studio there were no tutorials so i just sat on it, jus like the MPC where i would just sit for hours and just play around. Thing is i got thousands of vinyl records, almost all the sounds i have are default mpc sounds on literally ONE sample pack. One thing you have to understand is that dont worry about whats good or bad just do it. if it sounds like shyt so be it, it takes a long time to get it going.

i made this completely on fl studio because i was lazy and didint wanna lug the MPC around one day. Of course i used samples and no im not gonna reveal what they are but thats not my point, my point is, sit on it, play with it and if you look at a tutorial and dont know what youre doing then just keep trying. i didint really get a full hold of it until 2 years after i got it, but i didnt REALLY get my own sound until 2012 starting from 2005. but thats me. people are better and faster these days.

Dope shyt... you ever fukk with Ableton?

no. honestly, all i ever use is fl studio and the mpc. i use f studio 9, which is old as hell but doesnt make a difference to me. i use only literallly 4-5 plug ins the rest are samplles or me manipulating the tuntabe.

Essentially my first beat. First to make it past just a 2 bar loop. First beat i made using FL Slicer..obviously i didnt know what i was doing, but Primo has beats just as choppy (but 100000x more professional than mine obv)

Its a Black Sabbath sample..a couple keys laid over top to round out the melody a little

I did a LIGHT mix...i'm still trying to figure all of that stuff out without completely compromising the sound. The type of person I am though i'll be EQ'ing this basic ass beat for 10 years.

DAMN breh I really appreciate that... Its the FIRST beat I got that far with lol. Its really like the 16th beat i started on...its just the one i learned the most while making i guess.

This shyt is fun though. Now i wanna make something the complete opposite of that.
