I've just graduated and I'm about to get into investment banking, in fact, I just had a meeting with an agency today. Should I be worried @Theraflu ? :lupe:

No, you'll be fine.

Just do as @newworldafro said and work for a few years then leave.

A lot of the few black dudes I met when I first left college left after 2 years to join other places. One works for the UN now the other moved into Journalism.

So use it as a stepping stone. My mistake was not creating an end goal or plan, I wanted to stay till M.D level but it's really the kind of environment where you save, get your contacts and get out.

The new class of summer interns started on monday so he has been sitting with me shadowing me since then and he makes a lot of stupid convo. Yes, I've spoken to him a lot. 100% college and society ties because the boy knows nothing. He went to the same college as our M.D and as you know they all have strong alumni ties.

Yo...that shyt pisses me off b.

Reminds me of when I tried to get a job at Zumiez in Pittsburgh. Being knowledgeable about skateboarding fro over 20 years of experience, watching videos, reading magazines, etc..I was just discouraged when they just hired a bunch of dumb white kids that knew nothing about how to set up a skateboard and knew nothing about what they were selling or the companies behind them...white people that don't know shyt about anything but just get ahead because their white and seen as "safe" "reliable" etc...

shyts fukked up.

My end goal was to get to MD level but my Dad told me I should create a 5 year plan because he said there's nothing worse than getting caught in corporate limbo. I'm only 21 so the money is really attractive to me right now but I know I'm gonna have to put up with that affirmative action bullshyt.

First of all, well done for succeeding academically and becoming financially stable when so many obstacles was put in your way as a young black man.

Secondly, I agree with what @LAFisher's grandmother said (except the darkskin part... :skip:)

Life is too short to be in a job/profession that you hate. Have you read the Mexican fisherman's story? If you haven't, I think you should ---> http://bemorewithless.com/the-story-of-the-mexican-fisherman/

You want to look back on your life and be able to smile. We spend more time at work than at home.. so if we truly hate our career, then we should work towards making some serious changes. You don't have to quit today, but start saving and have your exit plan ready.

:patrice:

I'm sure your future wife wouldn't want you to be stuck somewhere you hate.

Good luck!

Okay

BSc = Bachelor of Science (undergrad)
Msci = Integrated Master in Science (post grad masters 1 year)
CFA = You can start doing your CFA from senior year, so you can do level 1 in senior year, level 2 in your first year as an analyst.

CFA isn't too hard to get, you go to the classes in the evening after work. Having a post grad degree and your CFA accelerates you to associate quicker if you don't have MBA. if you're going to business school after your 1st and 2nd year od being an analyst you don't need all this but I couldn't afford busienss school at the time and didn't want the debt so opted for MSCi and CFA which was cheaper.

Exactly that. This is why I'm saying people especially black should stop telling their kids all that 'just work ten times harder and go to college' crap. I remember my Ghanian parents were always going on and on and on about how education this education that. A degree is great and all but I really wish people would start speaking to black boys about what happens when you actually GET to the destination. Because after school and said degree it's a whole different ball game.

What about the other minorities? Asians and Indians. How do they get treated?

missed this.

they loveeeeeeee Asians as in the oriental type. Asian women especially progress really well. There are a lot of Asian people at my firm A LOT. They are the model and chosen minority tbh. Indians are treated okay and there's quite a few of them too. No sightings of black people tho.

This is the reason I didnt go into investment banking and went into accounting/financial management. I kinda know your pain OP, I went to a top business school and interned at Credit Suisse, the chaotic environment and stress attached to the job is most definitely not worth it. Plus the pressures of being black in a corporate setting will usually decimate your psyche.

Do what makes you happy man, don't let the hefty check define you.
