I feel like Q-Tip should be mentioned in the same breath as Premo and Pete Rock

He definitely gets overlooked, his "One Love" remix is one of my favorite remixes of all time. But because of his prominence with Tribe, people forget how ill he can be behind the boards.

With that being said J-Zone is still my favorite rapper/producer

I would mention him in the same breath as Pete Rock and Large Pro

But wouldn't put him up there wit Primo, Dre and Rza

That's just my opinion :manny:

why not?

he's used some of the best samples ever in hip hop.. and straight killed them.

For me, I think I overlook Tip more becuz he was actually rapping as well. He didnt come in the game as a producer first, rapper second like Pete, Large Pro or even Kanye

It's all public perception. It's his fault for making Ali Shaheed Muhammad look like he was the "go-to" producer of the Tribe Called Quest. When Q-Tip was doing most of the producing

He's still no where near Primo's level though

That's probably true on a beat for beat basis...
But if we go by albums...

People's Instinctive
Low End Theory
Midnight Marauders
The Infamous

That's a tough resume to match...

In all honesty, in 2015, I would trust a new Q Tip track over one of these producers putting out one. real talk

and I love all of them

To me, Tip was always really versatile - from doing Native Tongues records to overseeing The Infamous, messing with Apache for a record like 'Gangsta bytch', fukking with DeeLite, mentoring Dilla, on to guesting on Chemical Brothers tunes. Even now he's producing for D'Angelo, Esperanza Spalding and Roc Marciano.

I've always felt that Primo suffered in recent years for being 'The Guy' in NY in the 90's, because once the sound changed and he decided to stick with what he had, he became a museum piece.

Just off Jazz (We Got), Scenerio, Electric Relaxation, Crooklyn Dodgers, alone:wow:

...I have an eternal affinity for Tribe's early 90s Heavy/Low Bass production:ohlawd:

They don't make Hip-Hop BEATS like that anymore:mjcry:

Q-Tip is an underrated producer, and his ear for beats was crazy, I can't put him in the same class as Pete Rock or Premo, but I think he's a top 15 of all time producer. His style of production may have aged the best though and the recent stuff he has done has been very good.
