I can explain what happened. They made a good show. It was supposed to be about some people who survived a plane crash and landed on a remote island with a few secrets to discover. It was well received. American TV execs recognized this and said....well....we need more seasons. So a show that should have probably only been a season long maybe two, needed a story to fill those seasons. What you end up with is a chaotic mess of many questions and very little answers. Is there any surprise that one of the guys writing for that show was also the person who ended up writing Prometheus?
Don't try to figure it out. People try to find meaning in minute details when in actuality the reality is far less spectacular. There was only mystery in that show because they basically had too line some guys pockets.
