I don't understand why people don't get what happens at the end of the lost series

I thought the whole point of the show was the mystery of the Island not the characters but i guess you can't have a show run that long and not have people attached to characters. I just see the whole alt time line as useless if it did not pertain to the island.

That was a huge component of the show, but mystery by itself means nothing if you don't have characters you care about. That is where shows like Flash Forward, The Event failed because they had interesting premises but it didn't matter because you didn't really care about the people. Looking back the whole flashback/flashforward thing was a brilliant storytelling device and no show has really been able to duplicate it as well since.

The alt timeline maybe not have been the best way to wrap up the series, but it did have some good episodes among them.

The show was always about the characters, the island itself was a character that viewers endeared. That's the reason why Lost was so successful because they had a large ensemble of characters that people were invested in. The events of the Island did happen and Jack sacrificed himself for everybody else. His journey ended where it started. The title of the show is a double entendre, the characters were lost spiritually and lost literally on Island that helped them find themselves.

:snoop: at people still trying to make sense of the nonsense years later, even after one of the writers admitted it was all made up as they went along.

We all understand what the ending was. We were just disappointed that we wasted all that time on a wild goose chase with an ending that was pulled out of the creator's ass.

So wait...the OP doesn't understand why people don't understand the finale, yet he himself doesn't even have it right? And he has multiple people cosigning him in this thread even though other people have already explained it well? SMH

Its not like the writers didn't make it obvious. Flash sideways in season 6 was the only purgatory. Everything else was reality. If you don't understand anything else, its because they didn't answer your questions and left a lot of shyt open.

You're wrong. They died in the plane crash so the island isn't actually an island to the physical world. The island was purgatory full of evil to be conquered by good so that's why Richard said "Y'all wanna know the secret?...We're all dead". Why do you think Locke got his leg back? and why do you think Rose ain't got no cancer? because they're dead.

You are mistaken. They were alive through seasons 1-6...the flash-sideways were the events that happened to them after they died. They were in limbo and all created personas there that were based on unresolved issues in their lives.

We all understand what the ending was. We were just disappointed that we wasted all that time on a wild goose chase with an ending that was pulled out of the creator's ass.

This. I understood what they did with the ending...I just didn't like it.

If this is true I'm glad I gave up on Lost after season 4

despite what happened towards the end of the show, LOST is still in my top 5 shows ever... I've never looked forward to a show more on a week to week basis than Lost, even if we didn't get all the answers we wanted... the hype and discussion around the show after episodes was unlike anything we've ever seen, shyt was a cultural phenomenon
