I don't understand why people don't get what happens at the end of the lost series

I still say that the writers intended for the island to be purgatory from the off but threw that idea in the bushes once everybody started speculating and coming to that conclusion. The reason that things went to shyt is because they tried to keep elements that would have only worked in conjunction with their original vision.

Then why were michael and walt able to leave the lsland and walt actually grew up and aged if they were dead then walt woukdnt have aged

True....there are many questions in that show like Why wasn't Michael in the church he died on the freighter? and why Desmond's wife "Penelope" was in the church?, etc....many questions that doesn't make sense.

They weren't dead the entire series. Everything that happend on the island happend to them while they were alive. Now in the last season when they would show the alternate timeline when jack had his kid and all that stuff was indeed purgatory. That was the timeline they were in untill they all died and met up in the church. They dont say how much time went by between what happened on the island and them actually being dead but it was obvious that there was a significant amount of time that went buy. During that time is when Hurley was running the island and brought back Walt.

This right here.

Everything that happened on the island, actually happened. Jack actually died there, while Sawyer, Kate, etc left on the plane and went on to live their lives however long it might have been.

As for Ecko not being in the church, I heard the producers wanted him there and it was a scheduling issue or he didn't want to do it. Penny being there although she wasn't on the island was more of a feel good moment of seeing them reunited.

It seems like a lot of people have soured on the show, but it is still one of the greatest shows I have seen and even the later episodes have some really good moments. The episode where Sun/Jin go out and Hurley, Jack break down in tears on the beach :sadbron:

Then what was the island then
Just an island powered by time altering dark matter and "magic." The basis of the island was to hold whatever the hell was in that pool of water down. Which is why they needed a protector.

Like dude said in here it could have been meant to be purgatory at the beginning but they obviously changed that later on.

The island was just a mystical place that existed and had these strange properties of shifting, causing women to die who gave birth, being able to cure Rose, Locke etc. They tried to explain it in the last season with the magic pool and the Man in Black digging a well to harness the resources and that is when I think they messed up. When they gave answers to some of the questions like who Jacob and the Man in Black were it disappointed, see the episode Across the Sea.

Not sure exactly what you mean, but the alt timeline is the story idea they decided to go with the last season and acted as a way to bridge the final events on the island and give fans of the show a happy ending with the group being re-awakened and re-united all together at the end.

Ultimately I think the show as a whole did a great job in creating characters, Jack, Locke, Sawyer, Ben, Ecko, Sayid, Juliet, etc that fans cared about and the ending reflected that because seeing them reunited meant something to me at the end. Where it fell short in some peoples eyes is answering all the mythological questions and why exactly everything happened, etc.

I thought the whole point of the show was the mystery of the Island not the characters but i guess you can't have a show run that long and not have people attached to characters. I just see the whole alt time line as useless if it did not pertain to the island.
