Considering the ongoing discussion here, I think this is a cool podcast from Citations Needed that looks at the fearmongering being pushed right now. Take decades of violent crime decreases, protests against overpolicing and tough on crime tactics, then throw in a globally destabilizing pandemic...and you have an easy recipe for cops to start selling baseless conclusions about causes and solutions.

you kind of taking both sides of the argument

crime has been on a steady decrease since the mid 90s so “tough on crime” as you call it did work

the defund crowd loves to pretend like their aren’t social workers, after school programs and resources being poured in.

none of that has to do with people committing crimes now. Those people need to be policed

But doesnt the decrease also correlate with the decrease in lead use? There will always be those who need to be policed but I believe the overwhelming majority of people and crime can be addressed through early intervention measures such as better and adequate funding for social programs, addressing social inequity and systemic racism. After that we could hopefully identify the people who just seem unreachable and start figuring out how to address them.
