Maybe they were squatters. And since Al had Officer Dan as a friend, he was able to get away with it for all those years.

Officer Dan was Al's friend in the later seasons when he joined NO MA'AM, but those early season Officer Dan was no friend. I rememer those early arrest he made he be like "You again Bundy?!"

On a side note I always thought the show was better when the Bundys were a relatively normal family of bitter losers rather than when everyone else was mooching off of Al.

The Bundys may have been low class, but they were living better than some people. I remember on the early seasons Al used to have Vinnie Verducci and his pops over their house and they were poor as dirt... I'm so glad they didn't get that spin-off show.
