On a side note I always thought the show was better when the Bundys were a relatively normal family of bitter losers rather than when everyone else was mooching off of Al.

Obviously, you've gotta preface this by saying "it's just a show". With that said, if you want to try and figure it out from a more realistic perspective...

One of Al's major character traits is self-deprecation. I remember seeing an Ed O'Neill interview where he said he based the character off his pops, who he said had this "regardless of what happens, I'm gonna lose anyways so hell with it" type of attitude. Al may not have been as poor as he made it seem. His job for damn sure didn't seem as hard as he made it out to be. Yeah the bytches were fat as fukk but it still seems like most of his time was spent just fukking around in the store, dreading the next customer, but not really working particularly hard. The store was in a shopping mall from what I understand and he probably picked up good commission from time to time. Lots of folks live paycheck to paycheck.

Al was just kind of a miser that made everything more terrible than it may have actually been. In the end, he clearly loved his family (when he acted like he didn't), he occasionally liked having sex with Peggy (he acted like it was hell on earth), he probably was just an average Joe (that acted like he was living in a cardboard box).

Seems like the kids mostly fend for themselves. Bud was smart, and I think he actually worked at times. Kelly probably got most of her shyt from the guys she fukked around with and maybe her friends.

Regarding Peggy, I actually have seen this type of attitude (A less cartooney one) from my own mother... My family was middle class, mom still seemed to have more clothes, shoes, and purses than you would expect. You go out out to thrift stores and shyt and you can accumulate a lot of cheap shyt.

Al had a normal TV, normal car, etc.

Keep in mind that the first season or so of the show is different than the others. Peggy is much more house-wife like, she even cooks and shyt... The first season is actually a lot more realistic in terms of being a middle to lower-middle class family living paycheck to paycheck. As with a lot of shows of course, the show eventually got more silly in later seasons, to the point where you see them arguing over a single m&m and shyt.

That house wasn't that nice, he clearly lived in a lower-middle class area or a busted house in a nice neighborhood. Yes, in the 80's that house would've went for 60-65k tops, but in those days, if you had a steady job and you saved your money, you could get into some sort of house, even with average credit. Also, Al didn't seem to spend his money overly recklessly. If Peggy and the Kelly weren't so f*cking high-maintenance, they probably live better.

man that house was nice especially if you're living in a small ass apartment. The problem is the house wasn't maintained well. But a house like that in a pretty nice neighborhood now a days would be over 200K. In the 70s/80s i'm guessing maybe 70K but i'm no housing expert.

lol

1) he prolly got it for "the low" after stacking his cash

2) he's white peoples version of broke ..which means they've got money
Just not what the average suburban anglo gets.. black peoples version is North philly, compton etc type of real hood living

3) he's white so u kno his credit is automagically better

But that's what I'm saying, he lived well in comparison to the average black person, but white people standards are a lot higher, his family could very well be looked at as white trash. Don't get me wrong they weren't poor, but they were def in the lower half of middle class.

Maybe they were squatters. And since Al had Officer Dan as a friend, he was able to get away with it for all those years. :yeshrug:

your being a little generous with that 25-30g's for a shoe sales man

I would say 20-22k the most

Um no. I sold shoes for a living and after commission and working full-time, you can pull around 25K a year. You can be eating a lot better if you worked at Nordstrom or even more (Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales)

But Al Bundy ain't on that level. Peggy's hustling on the low to keep that beehive of her's up like that.
