French's album barely went double plywood and he's still on every other hit single.

Rae don't sell cause Rae ain't promoted.

Plus the labels ain't tryna push genuine artists as much anymore. The album has been replaced by the playlist and playlists are compromised of singles. That's where we are right now, an era of singles.

Hip-hop (and really the music biz in general) has a heavy, HEAVY corporate influence right now. Stronger than it has ever been.

We didn't do that, they did.

Word. You're right breh, you're right. It's all about singles at this point. Rae doesn't have the backing of a major and most dope dudes minus Kendrick have that major label backing...it's too much money involved in hip hop now although the industry is making little to 0 money

Bro I live in NY and I shyt you not the 2 major hip hop stations here (hot97 and power105 for you outsiders) only pump out like a 7-8 song rotation. It's the same fukkin shyt every hour.

These joints ain't bein requested they're bein pushed.

The whole model has changed.

Yeah I know. I went to college in NY and when I went back this March for my boys bachelor party, the radio is just on some other shyt. The playlists aren't even tabulated the same way they used to be and the radio stations in the DC area aren't any better breh. Same shyt, and I used to work at one of the major stations down here so I know how they work. The PD's may as well work for corporate full time as opposed to letting the DJs play what they want

There's a good doc on Netflix called "Download" and it chronicles the beginnings of Napster and the whole p2p epidemic. There's a brief section where it illustrates how all the labels got swallowed by the huge corporations. That was the beginning of the end IMO.

I still buy cds and i buy blu-rays now instead of dvds.

I think theres a lot to be said for owning cds and dvds/blu-rays, like the fact that its yours forever and there are no constraints on it unlike things like Itunes and streaming. You can use your possessions however you please. Not to mention that it helps the industry a lot because when you stream music or movies, the actual artists involved get almost nothing. I was reading an article about it that said if everybody streamed shyt, the entertainment industry would collapse, and then you wouldn't have any music or entertainment. If you look at what happened to Itunes sales in the last year, its already happening a lot.

They don't want to hear that tho breh. They believe that these things are just created out of thin air and shouldn't have to be paid for

And what's this about iTunes sales?:isthatall:

There are other ways for the music biz to generate revenue and compensate artists beyond album sales.

It's their responsibility to adapt and keep themselves afloat, not ours.

Itunes sales dropped this year for the first time since they started, mainly due to the increased popularity of streaming.

Which is why they quickly jumped on Dre and Iovines Beats brand, so they can start making money from their streaming service.

Yeah if I see a good deal on a dvd/blu ray I'm going to always pick it up even though I've got hundreds already to get around to watching, just can't resist it.

This is my problem. I had a 400 plus DVD collection at one point, now I'm at 200 Blu's and most of them are unwatched, but when you see good ass deals I keep buying.

Better to reign in Hell than serve in Heaven
I know a lot of you guys are big film buffs and take great pride in your collections but with the growing popularity of streaming services and streaming devices do you believe that the age of physical media is almost at an end?

Your thoughts?
physical media still OUTSELLS digital in every single category

so it'll be a long ass time before physical is actually forgotten

people act like cds are gone cause they don't buy them.... meanwhile digital music only accounts for 31% of all music sales.. what you think the other 69% is?

inShare
While there's no doubt that the music industry is one that continues to be in flux, Nielsen just announced that US music sales managed to grow 3.1 percent on the back of strong digital music sales. Despite a growing number of legal alternatives to purchasing digital music, Nielsen found that digital album sales increased 14 percent in 2012 to reach 118 million units — that's good for 37 percent of all albums sold. That's up from last year, when digital album sales accounted for 31 percent of all music sales. Still, that growth in digital album sales wasn't enough to offset the 12.8 percent decline in physical album sales — and since physical sales still account for the majority of all music sold, overall album sales dropped 4.4 percent year-over-year.

people think bluray and dvd are dead.... meanwhile they make more money in sales than streaming (netflix, hbo) and digital sales combined... easily.. damn near double

online-movie-sales.jpg

video game wise, digital JUST beat physical for the first time last year... for 1 quarter... barely

Research firm NPD Group has released a new report called Q3 2013 Games Market Dynamics: U.S., which details the spending habits of video game consumers in the United States during the third quarter of this year. The report notes that $3.45 billion was spent on games in Q3 2013. Around $1.30 billion of that total was spent on physical game software, while $1.75 billion was spent on digital content (digital purchases, DLC, subscriptions, social, and mobile games), $436 million went towards used games and game rentals.

so people thinking it'll just disappear in the next year or two.. or physical is already dead... really have no clue

just look at the xbox one fiasco... a little thing called, always be connected to the internet, started a worldwide uproar

the entertainment company as a whole would have to move towards that... basically saying fukk physical media and everything would have to be kept in some sort of cloud.. cause your physical drives and computers would be filled up quick
