Yes they are. A lot of coaches make their kids run bleachers and stadium steps for that very purpose.

Squatting is a good exercise and I would never talk it down, but my goodness sprinting full out on an inclined surface is an also an outstanding leg workout. Another thing that will build leg strength is running in sand. If you run in sand on a hill then the workout will be just that much better.

So yeah squats are really good, but there is a reason that a lot of people won't run hills.
You just took me back,

When I lived in Memphis, I used to go down town by the river and sprint upstairs

By the 6th time up, I physically couldnt go anymore, legs was trembling and shyt. That was the first time I experienced hitting the wall and bonking out from sheer glycogen depletion. I had to just sit there and recuperate til I was able to walk again. I love it though. lost 30 lbs at the time doing that + plust I.F.

Stair Sprints is right up there with swimming as far the most intense exercises go.

speaking of I'm working on getting a stair climber , maybe next year

Squats destroy your knees the stronger you get, or you have to strap up your knees every time you do a set.
There's better and far more long term sustainable ways to build and keep your legs in great shape.

But if you're a young guy with stick legs, you have to do them, but once your legs are in great shape, you can maintain that physique without touching squats

Now think about the strength that developed in your quads, hamstrings, glutes and calves sprinting up those steps. That is why I laugh at dudes that think that squats are the best leg exercise, because that tells me that they don't sprint on inclined surfaces or run in sand. That shyt hurts and your legs get super strong.
