I don't know. I tend to use them for their intended purposes but I've worked with social media professionally so I have a different perspective on it.

I'm assuming if two people are long distance, they are having conversations and forming a connection outside of social media that may lead them to make that type of comment. Random long distance strangers aren't doing that.

They do have to start off as random long distance strangers, though. My 10 likes and a comment thing was more hyperbolic than literal. Slippery slope type thing.

For me, most people I have on instagram are friends, on and offline but they're definitely people I've spoken to or have a decent relationship with. Most people find their instagram friends off their social accounts (fb and twitter) so I'm assuming these aren't random ass people sending those type of things.
