We will write books because it will be necessary then...

The chances of a natural occurring event to wipe out every single city in the world is pretty low...To worry about such an event is borderline paranoia...

I don't think it's justification for keeping the library status quo...

All books should be transcribed to e-Books, and libraries need to become like technology centres...Get rid of the racks, to make more space for computers and other interactive technological gadgets...

For example, a robotic mannequin who can interactively teach children/anyone the human anatomy, an interactive world map or globe that can teach children/anyone about other countries, interactive encyclopaedias that can take you through journey through Peru during the height of Inca empire, and other things of that nature...

Let's embrace the future...

You can have "tech libraries" and "libraries" at the same time. They aren't exclusive. You want us to embrace a future where we have no control which is obviously dumb.

Lets keep books still.

no one gives a fuq about a public service esp if they are in the black/poor community. after they digitize books they'll shut down libraries in the poor communities in the name of saving money. they already do this with schools so it's gonna happen with libraries too.
I hope you're wrong.
That would be terrible.

Isn't that what the Communists and Nazi's did?
see and had those books been digitized they could have been emailed outside the country or stored on easily hidable thumb drives and saved for future generations.

Speaking strictly in terms of "library" them going high tech is the right thing to do.

Thumb drives expire MUCH faster than any book

This isn't an either or situations. There are advantages to both mediums. Technocrats want to eliminate physical things and take away our agency. We will all suffer.

which is why i said "in terms of a library". I don't have any problem with books existing. Mankind is on the doorstep of what we'll be able to do with technology, your "Thumb drives expire MUCH faster than any book" is assuming we will stop making advances into digital storage and longgevity. Are you really of the opinion that we're at the human zenith of technological understanding and achievement?

I do think there is a ceiling and we are closer to it than we think

I think Libraries are the ultimate signifier of physical books. shyt, I bet if level 3 and 4 civilizations exist then they'd have libraries.

Really the best solution is to combine both mediums. A hologram book which mimics the physically of books and the speed of e-books.

Doesn't matter where you get info as long as its stored.

Once the info is stored its value whether it be in a book or online is equal.

Keeping book is just for nostalgic purposes. They can get burned or lost just like any thumb drive can expire or break down.

I"m sure they would, a repisitory of knowledge seams pretty logical to me, that's really not the question, the question is the medium on which that knowledge is stored. You're telling me the best thing a civilization can come up with to safeguard it's wisdom and knowledge is something we developed back in BC?

Something tells me if we were ever visited by an advanced civilization NOT focused on destroying us but helping us the first thing they'd say is, "um you do realize that you're storing all your information on smashed up trees; they are very susceptible to rot, fire, water, moisture, oils, weather, time, bugs, dust, etc, etc. why don't you try storing that in XYZ".

A book takes SIGNIFICANTLY more effort to destroy than a thumb drive. A book left undisturbed will last longer than a thumb drive.

The information is 1A but the medium is pretty damn important

Nope. I'd think they'd have some sort of digital format that was 3 dimensional, essentially improving on the tree concept as opposed to the e-book concept.

That's where the internet comes in. It can also and will also be stored there which makes its value with book equal and even more as storage technology grows and books stay the same.

How do you know the internet will always exist?

So they'd likely have a device capable of storing books...perhaps they'd call it a "computer" or something like that...

This is where the whole "the cloud is not trustworthy" argument comes into play.

A computer is not 3 dimensional and does not last as long as a bound book.

How do you know books will always exist?

There are many books lost to history. Whether be burned, lost, cut up to the most tiniest pieces or any other event that ruins a book.

Just like if you lose internet in one area the data can be stored and accessed in another area. Same can apply to losing a book and having to make copies as back up on case it gets lost.
