:aicmon: it may not be the same in terms of speed, but the 'feature' is there. of course it's not the 'same'.

Maybe it's just because I'm younger than y'all....

Read up on what the "motor cortex" does and you'll understand why simulating flipping on a 1dimensional screen isn't the same as flipping a page on a bound book. Typing isn't the same as the nuance of writing with a pen or pencil.

This right here.
For someone who will grow up more digital than analog this WILL BE how things are done. At some point 50-60 years from now Broletariat is going to be having this same debate with his grandkids about how he needs to hold his e-book in his hand because downloading all the information straight into his head just doesn't feel right to him.

I'm sure when they rolled out the first pressed papyrus or rice paper there was some dude saying, "fuk that you want me to write on that flimsy piece of paper, i fuks with stone and stone only, it lasts longer and i can see and feel it, plus it looks better".

Times change, tech changes and people always want things to stay the same...go figure.

Wrong. Read up on anatomy and neuroscience before you spew inane, incorrect babble. This is the first age where we are transcending our physical reality and bypassing things that heavily utilize our cerebral cortex to mitigating it's use.

You still haven't sent me those links of the studies.

http://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/...books-vs-printed-books-some-new-findings.html

i'm tried looking for the actual study with no success (nvm there was a link at the bottom i didn't see http://www.joanganzc00neycenter.org/publication/quickreport-print-books-vs-e-books/), never the less the study was with 32 kids, hardly solid proof and clearly there are differences but not enough research done into what those are, what is causing those differences and if there isn't a way to optimize a reading experience.

I like books, don't get me wrong, but the writing is on the wall, at some point books will go the way of the dinosaur.

Young kids? :stopitslime: They don't even have fully developed cortex :lolbron:

I'll look into it myself

Books won't go the way of the dinosaur, they will be luxuries for the rich, if people like you keep spewing nonsense.

Just like ancient stone tablets...
They will be for "the rich" only in the same way a "first edition" type of book is or an ancient manuscript.

And you're right they don't have a fully developed cortex, the question is what will e-books do to that development long term.

English is a globalized language. Books will still have utility unlike ancient manuscripts. Horrible example.

I think it's obvious that less motor cortex stimulation = less control and detachment from reality but I guess we will have to wait another 10-15 years.

Latin wasn't globalized, unless you think Cacs are the only people that exist?
me thinks you missed the point. But year sure we can play the semantics game. YOU ARE TECHNICALLY CORRECT Latin was not global. BUT... if we're gonna play that game, neither is English.

English has penetrated further than any other language could imagine. It's spoken fluidly and frequently on every continent. If there is any language that can be called globalized, it's definitely English. Latin had the unfortunate fate of being before the Enlightenment and thus is but a base.
